Cambridge vs. Oxford

In England exists one of the most storied and persistent rivalries of all time.  Spanning sports, academics, politics and more, these two Universities have been competing for over 800 years! Oxford was first founded in the 11th century and in 1209 following a mysterious murder and unproven guilty verdict, several scholars left to start their own university, Cambridge.

As an outsider wanting to remain neutral one can use the moniker Oxbridge to refer to both but any student or alumni would never dare relinquish their school pride so.  As two of the perennially top ranked universities in the world there are many domains where each can claim top honors. Oxford has produced 27 Prime Ministers of the United Kingdom while Cambridge is responsible for 14. On the other hand, Cambridge can claim the world record of Nobel Prize winners at 89 while Oxford has 48.

As impressive as those numbers are the true heart and soul of the rivalry are in sports.  The Annual Cricket Match is as fierce as it gets and Cambridge holds a slight edge 60-57 over Oxford with 56 draws.  Drawing even more fans, cheers and outside spectators is The Boat Race.

Approximately 250,000 people attend the event and tens of millions tune in to watch.  Set on the Thames River between the two schools, the 4.2 mile race takes place on boats with 8 rowers each.  Most of the races are highly competitive with only a few standout defeats.  In 2003 Oxford edged Cambridge by a mere 12 inches.  In a rare controversy in 2012 a protester swam in front of the boats which were forced to stop or risk gravely injuring the man.  Shortly after restarting there was a collision between the boats causing one of Oxford’s oars to snap, essentially eliminating their chance for victory.  Despite this the rivalry continued strongly with Cambridge currently holding a slight edge 83-80.

Historically Oxbridge has produced some of the finest minds in literature, science and politics.  Both can claim subjectively to be the best by referencing their alumni: Sir Isaac Newton, Charles Darwin, Francis Bacon and John Cleese coming out of Cambridge, Oxford claiming J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Stephen Hawking and Oscar Wilde.

May the rivalry live on!

Happy International Women’s Day!

During the constant struggle towards equality, there were several points where women broke through barriers and prejudice to earn rights and freedom were key.  The suffragette movements across the globe spanned decades and numerous inspirational women.  Emmeline Pankhurst (1858-1928) pushed the right for women to vote in England in 1918. “We are not here because we are law-breakers; we are here to become law-makers.”

Susan B. Anthony succeeded in voting in the United States presidential election in 1872 before being arrested and found guilty in a trial during which she was not permitted to speak. She used this to gain momentum and continue fighting for the suffrage movement.  “Men, their rights, and nothing more; women, their rights, and nothing less.”

Post WWII women came into the workplace in greater numbers than ever and while some excelled, most struggled with unequal treatment and glass ceilings for decades. In entertainment iconic women broke through to inspire millions.  Marilyn Monroe was a savvy business woman apart from her incredible ability to reinvent herself and helped Ella Fitzgerald in her career.  Fitzgerald became the first African American woman to win a Grammy (bringing in 13 total) and was a civil rights crusader seeking justice and equality. “Women who seek to be equal with men lack ambition” – Marilyn Monroe

Politics was one of the last places women entered successfully but Margaret Thatcher blazed a trail as the first female Prime Minister of Britain in 1979 and ranks 4th on the historical list of British Prime Ministers.  She was dubbed the “Iron Lady” for refusing to compromise on her political views and leadership style “If you want something said, ask a man; if you want something done, ask a woman.”

Sports is another arena where women were able to use their stardom as a platform.  Both Billie Jean King and Martina Navratilova were extraordinarily successful tennis players and outspoken on gender equality and LGBT rights.  Famous for her match against Bobby Riggs, Billie Jean King inspired millions of women from that moment on.  She was the first tennis player and first female athlete to ever be named Sports Illustrated Sportsman of the Year in 1972. “I wanted to use sports for social change.”

To all the women and men reading this: Women are a strong group who have persevered through so much to be where they are today. Support them, inspire them, appreciate them and celebrate them today and every day!

A Wintertime Ski Break in Europe

With the holidays gone and the new year started, the timing is perfect for a ski vacation and Europe has a lot of incredible options.  The views at the iconic Zermatt are hard to beat and there are slopes for all levels of skiers.  The dry climate however can make some rocky trails impossible to ski and the location of town means hardly any sun gets through.  Those planning to be on the mountain all day will not have a problem so checking out Zermatt is a must.  There are several hotels on the summit such as Silvana Hotel on Furi allowing for ski-in ski-out, the ultimate skiers experience. With a ski room, indoor swimming pool and great food what else could a skier ask for?

Perhaps the best skiing found in Europe though is in Courchevel which has considerable routes and slopes for all levels of skiers in the Les 3 Vallées. The consistent snow and excellent weather is a boon whether sticking to the open runs or forested areas.  There are 600 km of runs, 66km of cross country skiing and 18km of snowshoe routes.

Après-ski in Courchevel is at the top of the game with exquisite culinary options and a multitude of Michelin stars in the village.  Le 1947 for example, has two Michelin stars and is run by famous French chef Yannick Alléno of Paris’ renowned Ladurée Champs Elysées restaurant.

5 star hotels and luxury chalets abound in Courchevel 1850 (the highest altitude village of the 4 Courchevels).  The Grandes Alpes hotel has ski-in ski-out, butlers, private chefs and a renowned Bellefontaine Spa featuring anti-ageing through unparalleled luxury, natural and precious ingredients from the Alps. The sauna, steam bath, swimming pool and rain showers are sure to do the trick for any looking to relax.

March is one of the best months to ski to take advantage of the weather and relatively slower season as February brings big crowds of families due to school holidays.  Do not let the season go by without taking the opportunity to ski some of the best mountains and runs in the world!

A Toast to Tequila on National Margarita Day

Cheers to #NationalMargaritaDay!

National Margarita Day in the United States is February 22 and the perfect opportunity for tequila lovers to enjoy the refreshing beverage served at innumerable establishments across the world. As a staple drink on any bar menú, margaritas have helped elevate the status of tequila as a versatile and high-quality spirit.

Many brands offer different tiers of tequila, which can be used for different occasions. For instance, Jose Cuervo has a highly sought-after ‘Reserva de la Familia,’ which is aged in American and French Oak Barrels for at least three years, yielding a distinctive taste.

To better understand the history behind tequila and its role in the mixology world, we turned to experts at the Five-Diamond resort in Los Cabos, Mexico: Las Ventanas al Paraiso, A Rosewood Resort. Las Ventanas al Paraiso champions the Rosewood hotel ‘Sense of Place’ philosophy in many ways, emulating the spirit and rich culture of Mexico through its design, offerings, dining and programming.

Oscar Mondragón and Oliver Chong are the resident expert Tequiliers at Las Ventanas, with over 11 years experience as tequila connoisseurs. The resort offers over 100 varieties of tequila, ranging from $13 USD to $300 USD, making Oscar and Oliver certified professionals.

How does one become a Tequilier?

To become a Tequilier, one must take various courses and trainings endorsed by the Tequila Regulatory Council in Mexico. Basic courses are three days, and the advanced course is a whole week in Jalisco with tastings and testing.

What makes one tequila more smooth or complex than another?

Smoother tequilas are distilled longer, which yields a purer flavor with more complexity. This is achieved through time and aging using different barrels. When aged in different barrels, tequila takes on subtle flavors such as vanilla, clove and cinnamon or even caramel, depending on the type of barrel and length of aging.

What are the most used tequilas for the classic margarita?

At Las Ventanas, we typically use Centenario Reposado unless another tequila is specifically requested. Other recommended tequilas include El Tesoro de Don Felipe Blanco or Casa Amigos Reposado.

What other margaritas does the hotel offer which are guest favorites?

Guests tend to favor our Jalapeño, Cucumber and Basil, and Tamarindo margaritas.

What is the Tequila Sign experience?

It is an over-the-top tequila tasting experience at Las Ventanas, where guests strive to guess the styles and categories of various tequilas. The tastings are blind to avoid any bias prior to the experience. Guests try a huge variety of tequilas, which are paired delicately with appetizers to create an even richer experience.

Where do you see tequila and tequila cocktails moving in the future?

In 5-10 years, I predict that tequila will be the most popular spirit in the world. At Las Ventanas, we regularly see people ordering tequila over other spirits. Even simple tequilas carry a lot of flavor and versatility, so it is easy to incorporate tequila into any cocktail.

The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao

The northern Spanish city of Bilbao is surrounded by beautiful mountains and is home to a wondrous work of art and architecture.  The Guggenheim Museum, designed by Canadian-American architect Frank Gehry, with a price tag for 89 million dollars, opened to the public in 1997.  Hailed as one of the main factors in revitalizing the city, immediately becoming a tourist attraction and bringing recognition and culture to the previously industrial port, it’s contemporary construction stands the test of time (with the help of a titanium clad exterior). It is frequently named one of the most important works of architecture in recent history.

The unique curves and intended ‘randomness’ of the design captures the eye and attention constantly.  The Atrium is the heart of the museum with curved volumes and large glass curtains to connect the inside and outside.  Abundant light and a skylight make all three levels a delight to be in whether admiring the atrium itself or the artwork within.  As impressive as the structure is, what is inside takes this museum to the peak of aesthetics.

The Guggenheim Bilbao boasts an impressive collection of contemporary art from the mid twentieth century to present day.  Pioneers such as Robert Motherwell, Yves Klein and Andy Warhol are just a few of the many great artists represented here.  Apart from the established collection many exhibitions are brought in, there are workshops and courses, exciting events, some social, some cultural and all extraordinarily well done.  Art After Dark allows you to visit the exhibitions to the beat of the best DJs.

One of the current featured collections is Richard Serra’s The Matter of Time, a series of eight sculptures made of weathering steel.  The entire room is part of the sculptural field with the pieces arranged deliberately to move the viewer through them both spatially and temporally.  As the sculptures evolve from simple curves to complex spirals, the experience of walking through the display resonates on several levels, producing different effects on movement and perception that have to be experienced to be understood profoundly.  This is the right time to visit the Guggenheim in Bilbao, if not now, when?

An Electric Dream: Audi’s E-Tron

Audi’s foray into the electric automobile market is a complete success.  The quality control and attention to detail that Audi has become known for highlights the biggest difference between the E-Tron and other electric SUV competitors.  The E-Tron is an Audi first and an electric car second.

This makes it the ideal transition to an electric car in terms of handling and style, weight and power.  It rides with extreme comfort and an incredible silence thanks to the acoustically insulating windshield and side glass as well as extensive underbody insulation.  The customary whiny sound of an electric vehicle is thankfully not heard as Audi made sure to eliminate this by encasing the motors in polyurethane boxes which are mounted to the subframes through rubber bushings.

With sufficient power ranging from 350-400 horse power depending on the mode (drive vs sport), the ride is smooth even upwards of 90 mph when driven on appropriate roads for this speed limit.  The high tech regenerative electrohydraulic assisted braking is able to amply recharge without feeling the typical drag or ‘pull’ of previous hybrid or electric cars from other brands.

The E-Tron gets approximately 250 miles or 400 kilometers per charge and while the home charging is around 8 hours, at the 150kW charging stations that are becoming more popular a 30 minute charge will provide up to an 80% charge.

Perhaps the coolest feature is the world first use of two high definition cameras instead of side mirrors on the doors.  They will project onto OLED screens inside the door for a clearer view.  These improve the aerodynamics and reduce the width of the already sleek design by 15cm.

For the tech savvy, Audi’s E-Tron can connect with Alexa to preheat the car from home or ask how much charge is left. This feature is a two-way street, able to turn on lights or set specific music to play at home while in the car.

Get Inspired by Galway, Ireland

Ireland is a small island full of life, big personalities, fun people, natural splendor and more.

Galway has a rich history dating back to the Middle Ages when it was a fishing village. There is traditional music being played by buskers on the street and bands in pubs such as the King’s Head Pub which has live music every night and has been a part of Galway for over 800 years.

The city comes alive in the summer with festivals and day trips to nearby wonders. The Cliffs of Moher are spectacular and make one feel a sense of awe as panoramic views are taken in.  The fresh ocean breeze will energize and peering over the edge will mesmerize, so do so with caution.  Standing on the big cliffs make one feel small yet also expands the mind’s eye and imagination.

Connemara is another one of the legendary beauties of Ireland conjuring images from a Lord of the Rings type of world, fantastical and almost hard to believe it exists in reality.  From the rugged landscape to the curated gardens, any direction provides captivation and inspiration.

There are many festivals to take part in, perhaps the most famous is the Galway International Oyster and Seafood Festival, which has taken place for over 64 years making it the world’s longest running Oyster Festival.  There are competitions, tastings, a gala, cooking classes and of course oysters everywhere.

Galway is becoming known for it’s gastronomy scene, staying true to the local flavors at Michelin starred restaurants Loam and Aniar.  Both use nearby foraged ingredients and traditional cooking and preservation methods for a truly authentic and delicious Irish experience.  Anyone looking for a catalyst for their own cooking can take a walking tour to see some of the producers, brewers, entrepreneurs and chocolatiers that make Galway the culinary scene it is.

Starting 2019 With a Balanced Lifestyle

With the holiday festivities and family functions over, the beginning of January is traditionally a time to organize and plan for the year.  For many these plans are work related, projects for a business, conference dates go into calendars and so on.  This year make January a chance to set up a balance between work and personal life.  While this can be difficult and means something distinct for different people, here are a few key tips and strategies.

Write out a weekly work schedule and see where there is an opportunity to put social or personal blocks of time and actually put it in the calendar.  It seems silly at first since it is not as ‘important’ as work but in reality it is.  Making time for yourself and friends or family or exercise will help you be a healthier and happier person which will make you a better worker or boss.  Success goes beyond material wealth, successful people are also people who value their health and wellbeing.

Personal goals are important.  If there are hobbies you already know you enjoy, set a goal to help motivate your continued progress.  Sign up for a race or tournament if it’s an athletic hobby.  Reading a book a month is a great goal which helps us develop personally and professionally, provides quiet time and improves our mind.

Take the days off you deserve and decide whether you want to use them to relax and recover or adventure and develop.  Either option is valid as well as a combination.  Wellness days at the spa or yoga classes are wonderful ways to pamper oneself and recharge.

For those fortunate enough to run their own company, focus 2019 on learning to delegate or finding the right people to be able to delegate to.  This might be the hardest thing to do but can make the biggest difference in work life balance.

Sergio Perez and the Checo Pérez Foundation

There can never be too many athletes who find a way to give back to the community.  Even though there is no mandatory contribution, once an athlete reaches a certain level of financial comfort and success, most recognize their success is only possible due to the fans who support them.  Sergio Pérez realized early how lucky he was to be able to compete at a high level doing something he loves.  He started competing at six years old in go kart races and over the years set records for youngest to make podiums and to win championships throughout various categories.

In 2012, at the impressive age of 22, he launched the Checo Pérez Foundation to support orphans and children with cancer.  Since then the project has grown and made a difference in the lives of millions in Mexico.  Their foundation helps support multiple children’s shelters and programs for children at risk or with few resources.  This includes setting up infrastructure for their success, workshops and courses on emotional development, expression, recreational activities and more.

In Sergio’s hometown of Guadalajara with the help of the Secretary of Development and Social Integration, the foundation opened a centre for multi-sensory stimulation to help children who are developmentally differently abled.  With special equipment to stimulate senses such as auditory or visual, the children’s ability to adapt and develop increases, greatly affecting their physical and intellectual ability. This in turn helps them become more autonomous, improving their quality of life.  Paola Pérez, the president of the Checo Pérez foundation (and sister to Sergio) said “it is incredible to see how the children develop their skills in a center like the one we have today.  This is the culmination of a very important project for the foundation.”

Most recently the foundation helped rebuild homes in Oaxaca after the series of earthquakes last September.  Millions of pesos and many hours of planning and work made this possible. The reward: “It is gratifying to see the smiles and demonstration of appreciation from the people in this community, in much the same way as the unity we showed as a country in the most difficult moments.  Thank you everyone!” – Sergio Pérez

No, THANK YOU Sergio!

The Sexiest Cars for 2019

Every year in the development of cars there are dozens of innovations and new iterations of classics.  Well known brands keep their hand in the game by maintaining their standards but up the ante with sleek styles, more efficient frames or more powerful engines. 2019 has brought a few spectacular additions to the world of hottest and sexiest cars.

As we race into the future the title of sexiest car is becoming a tale of two models. One is the vintage, elegant and ultra powerful gas cars many know and love.  The other is still nascent in it’s development but quickly gaining ground: the sustainably powered model.  These are hybrid or electric, futuristic and surprisingly strong.

BMW has successfully launched a hybrid sports car in the i8 Coupe.  Their new aerodynamic and sleek design adds efficiency and panache to an already illustrious flagship.  Boasting an excellent 0-60 in 4.2 seconds this model has some kick.  The aluminum and carbon fiber reinforced polymer butterfly doors are structurally and visually impressive.  Anyone who takes this for a spin will not be disappointed in the feel or the power . . .

Unless they have just driven the Aston Martin DBS Superleggera. This ‘Superlight’ car is anything but yet the power within means this car could weigh a ton and not be slowed down.  715 horsepower, lots of thrust and a twin turbo 5.2 Liter V-12 engine, eight-speed transmission and more eye popping stats than most people can handle.  This car is pure muscle on the inside, all style on the outside. The rounded rear fender bulges and chiseled creases on the hood and body make it beautiful.  Classic yet modern.

Due to the collaboration of Aston Martin and James Bond, perhaps it is impossible to remove bias in considering the DBS Superleggera the sexiest car in 2019.  The aesthetics of both are remarkable and power vs sustainability is becoming more of a preference.  As they say, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Singapore’s Super Vending Machine: A 15-Story Showroom for Luxury Cars

In a city already known for innovation and grandeur, a revolution in showcasing cars has captured the attention and nostalgia of many avid car enthusiasts. Anyone who remembers Matchbox cars and their packaging is sure to enjoy this grand scale representation with real exotic and luxury cars.  Promoted as a giant vending machine selling cars instead of chocolate bars or chips, this 4 tower, 15 story, glass fronted building by Autobahn Motors is a sight to take in.

They have big name preowned cars such as the Lamborghini Aventador, Rolls Royce Phantom Drophead, a 2014 McLaren 650S and dozens more.  Housing a total of 60 cars, all available at the touch of an iPad and brought down to the ground floor in 2 minutes, the preowned car dealership goes above and beyond the typical sales lot.  While waiting for the selected car a video of the chosen auto is shown with surround sound.  The scent in the showroom was specially curated by a French perfumery and general manager Gary Hong said perhaps there will be “wine for classic car buyers and whiskey for sports car enthusiasts” to be offered in the future to complete the experience.

The idea came as a combination of needing to be space efficient in a dense city and one of those quirky serendipitous moments.  Gary Hong was at a Toys ‘R’ Us with his son who was looking at Matchbox cars and a light went off in his head.  He realized the iconic nature that presentation had ingrained in so many people and appreciated the easy to locate display.

Although a similar idea had been done before in the United States on a smaller scale (30 cars) by Carvana, Hong has had a lot of attention and inquiries about the car retrieval system to revolutionize parking garages in dense urban landscapes.  This astounding technological achievement provides another example that necessity is the mother of invention.
