By: Noel Peterson

A private luxury lifestyle club’s role includes assuring that luxury standards are met in all aspects of the members’ travels. This encompasses private jet services and selection, luxury accommodations and world-class restaurant options. Traveling to distant destinations may unavoidably require a long layover at an airport – however this can provide a pleasurable part of the journey, especially if waiting at one of the following “gold, silver and bronze medal winners” of extravagantly-appointed airports.

Singapore Changi Airport by Sorbis.

The world’s best airport award for three consecutive years has been the Singapore Changi Airport which features a gorgeous butterfly and botanical garden, nature trail, swimming pool, movie theater, craft-making stations for children and more, including motion-detecting flowers that will bloom when approached. This airport takes home the gold.

Incheon International Airport by Sorbis.

For the silver, Seoul’s Incheon International Airport has many luxurious features including the largest duty-free shopping center on earth, spa services, an ice rink and daily orchestra and band performances that complement each season, as well as a golf course, casino, movie theater and a museum with beautiful scenic gardens.

Munich Airport.

Munich Airport takes the bronze in making any layover completely worth the wait. This airport includes a phenomenal beer garden and brewery, sleep cabins, an indoor surfer’s wave pool, indoor beach volleyball, showers, spa services and seasonal events such as a lovely Christmas market and an ice-skating rink during winter months, children’s miniature golf, playgrounds and jungle gyms.

Tokyo International Airport by ESB Profesional.

In addition, close runners-up in the luxury airport world include:

  • Tokyo International Airport (Haneda) famous for its cleanliness and close proximity to the city, shopping center, showers, and unique Japanese themes.
  • Hong Kong International Airport includes an Aviation Discovery Center, simulated golf course, and an IMAX theater.

Should Art Be Considered a Worthy Investment?

Art Investment – What Else?

By: Daniel J. Penseyres

Welcome to the “sub-zero-rate” world with its ZIRP, NIRP and QE. This means that bond yields are now negative in Switzerland, Germany, Finland, Netherlands, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France, Ireland, Sweden, Italy and Spain.

So, irrespective of the credit quality of those borrowers, bond investors in all of those countries are guaranteed to lose money if they hold that short-term paper until it matures. Strangely, when asked about risks, these investors tend to remain on the conservative side and continue to fear the volatility of the equity, currency and commodity markets.

Barnett Newman, “Black Fire”

So wealthy individuals are asking their bankers: Should «Art» be considered for my portfolio?

The main characteristics usually used to define art markets can be summarized in the following way: high-risk investment, illiquid, opaque, unregulated, high transaction costs, at the mercy of erratic public taste and short-lived trends.

Andy Warhol, “Triple Elvis”

Artworks do not generate any cash flows that can be discounted, however, income can be obtained through lending, with expenses incurred for storage, insurance and associated costs. The art markets are also currently virtually ‘unhedgeable’.

This short description of the art markets might be enough to discourage many. However, if we take a closer look at the latest trends, which are directly or indirectly, affecting the art markets’ they suggest the emergence of a financial fine art market where fine art is considered as a new asset class.

Alberto Giacometti, “Chariot”

Some high net worth individuals view art as a pure financial investment and with the growing need to diversify portfolios, there should be space for more investment products that offer an indirect exposure to art and other collectible assets. For now, some of these individuals are enjoying valuable art either exposed in their living rooms or hidden in freeports.

The 2018 season LGCT season began with a remarkable victory in Mexico City by Englishman Scott Brash on Ursula XII, who already had ten Global Grands Prix in his record. Thousands of enthusiastic fans came to the Campo Marte, which is also celebrating its 50th anniversary as the location of the 1968 Olympic Games.

The LGCT Grand Prix of Mexico City was given the Mexican treatment with mariachis and adelinas, adding even more color and vibrant culture to the high-level sporting event. With numerous top riders, including German Daniel Deusser and Italian Alberto Zorzi, Mexico also did not disappoint in the competition with its rider Nicolas Pizarro, sending Mexican fans into a fervor.

In a heart-pounding moment, Canadian Olympic champion Eric Lamaze, about to steal the victory from Scott Brash, knocked down the last jump of the jump-off and sending him into the fourth position.

With typical Mexican flair, Scott Brash was crowned champion the LGCT Grand Prix 2018 in Mexico City.

A Sense of Place at Las Ventanas al Paraíso, A Rosewood Resort

Peace. Pleasure. Perfection Unparalleled. Only at Las Ventanas al Paraíso, A Rosewood Resort

In this rapidly changing world, to succeed, leaders in industry must keep focused on what people want. Ty Warner’s vision for Las Ventanas al Paraíso, A Rosewood Resort, now celebrating its twentieth year, is one of providing the most impeccable service and accommodations in which every single detail has been hand-picked for beauty as well as function. Offering personal professional butler service and refined experiences for those who expect perfection, the guest experience at Las Ventanas al Paraíso is the ultimate in sensory pleasure.

As with all Rosewood resorts, “A Sense of Place” is a fundamental concept at Las Ventanas al Paraíso that refers to how the resort  respects and finds inspiration in the destination. In a personal interview with Ocean Blue, Frederic Vidal, the managing director of Las Ventanas al Paraíso shared with us a behind-the-scenes look at why the resort remains one of the most celebrated and respected properties in the world.

The phrase “sense of place” is one that Vidal repeatedly comes back to when describing the magical tapestry of the Las Ventanas al Paraíso experience. The desert inspired grounds and buildings blend seamlessly with the natural setting and highlight Los Cabos’ innate beauty of ocean meeting desert.

The resort’s suites feature butler service, spacious living areas, wood-burning fireplaces and exquisite décor showcasing the finest Mexican craftsmanship. Suites offer spectacular views of the sea and award-winning desert gardens; some suites combine sea and golf-course views.

Ty Warner Mansion

The Ty Warner Mansion is the ultimate private sanctuary at Latin America’s most awarded resort. The exclusive beachfront mansion looks directly over the water’s edge with panoramic views of the sea. A private elevator takes guest to a 9000-square foot rooftop terrace featuring a sundeck, glass bottom lap pool, glass-sided whirlpool spa, putting green, a custom pool table and massage pavilion. Mansion guests enjoy the services of a round-the-clock dedicated team, including a personal assistant, a butler and a chef.

The Residences at Las Ventanas al Paraíso

Following the unveiling of the Ty Warner Mansion, the jewel in the crown of the resort, Ty Warner is now presenting 30 exceptionally crafted Mexican Residences designed to showcase the best of Baja culture and offer residents a luxury home away from home in paradise.  The Residences at Las Ventanas al Paraíso are complemented by the same personal service and unparalleled amenities enjoyed throughout the resort.

Artisanal Aesthetics

The natural setting on the Sea of Cortez is embellished and enhanced with aesthetic appeal by art that embodies the heart and soul of Mexico. Las Ventanas al Paraiso showcases both original art and the centuries-old design traditions of master Mexican artisans. The meticulous handiwork of local craftsmen is evident throughout the resort.

Two notable works at Las Ventanas include a vivid painting in multi-colored cultural themes by Mexican master Rodrigo Pimental and the bronze sculpture of a mermaid by noted American sculptor Deloss McGraw. Pimental’s work adorns the reception area which welcomes guests as they are escorted into the heart of the resort.

Fine Dining with Baja Flavor

Similarly, Las Ventanas’ sense of taste is influenced by its sense of place. Guests can explore the distinctive, unique flavor of the Baja landscape in the resort’s restaurants offerings. One of Rosewood’s commitments is to “partner with local farms and food producers in a showcasing of locally grown, sustainable ingredients in fine cuisine.” New for this year, Vidal shares, is Arbol, an Asian-Seafood kitchen complete with Tandoor oven and a variety of wok-based dishes. A chef from India will finesse delicacies including lobster and crab tandoor. Las Ventanas offers “exquisite, personalized dining experiences in exclusive locations and combine seasonal ingredients, fine wine and top-tier culinary skills.”

Frederic Vidal states that the intrinsic nature of excellence stems from the DNA of Las Ventanas al Paraíso. It comes from this sense of place, which is found in all aspects of the property, both aesthetic and culinary, and underlining it all is the impeccable personal service.

Since its inception, the resort has set the highest standards of excellence in Los Cabos. Explained Vidal, “In early years guests would say, ‘Oh I wish my home butler could work with you here,’ so Las Ventanas responded by creating its own Butler Academy, ensuring exacting standards unparalleled by any other based on kindness of service, creativity of service and the range of service.

“The sense of people is the third branch of the Las Ventanas DNA,” explains Vidal. At Las Ventanas this begins from the top down. Ty Warner wants to look after people in the best way possible, and his philosophy is to fulfill the needs and wishes of his staff and guests. “The answer is always yes,” Vidal explains. This is done on many levels. For example, butlers never work alone; in fact there is at any given time there is a staff of over five hundred men and women attending less than half that number of guests.

Romance at Las Ventanas al Paraíso

Las Ventanas al Paraíso even has a Department of Romance that works to create special romantic moments for guests, from marriage proposals to anniversaries and more. The staff’s sole focus is to provide personalized and meaningful moments such as private candlelit dinners seaside with a guitarist playing in the background. Creating memories to last a lifetime is extremely important for the  resort.

This level of commitment from staff, states Vidal, makes every guest’s request a reality. He also revealed to Ocean Blue that most service is orchestrated in the hidden inner passageways built into the resort so that service is not only impeccable, it is also invisible.

As Vidal explains, the success of Las Ventanas is attributed to its sense of place, sense of taste and a sense of family and hospitality. This is evidenced he says, “by the guests who return year after year, and often two or three times a year.”

He also stresses that excellence is not stagnant. “You keep the original DNA but you must always be reinventing yourself.” He emphasized, “Without reinventing you die.” Excellence is something that changes, just as the definition of luxury and the kinds of experiences guests are looking for change. He states that the guest of today is not the same as the guest of yesterday in what they are looking for when they travel. “Millennials are in search of authentic and new experiences,” Vidal shared. However, the one thing that remains constant is the level of pampering that Las Ventanas provides and excels in.

Once-In-A-Lifetime Experiences

One way the resort caters to today’s travelers is through its once-in-a-lifetime experiences that it releases in collections of five twice per year. One such experience is the Magic Dinner, a theatrical experience at La Cava during which diners can enjoy the best wines in Mexico and a five-course menu with masterful wine pairings. A mysterious host trained at the famed Las Vegas Magic & Mystery School  performs  spectacular illusions throughout the meal.

Another favorite experience is “Champagne Under the Stars.” Los Cabos is one of the world’s best locations for star gazing, and the resort’s magnificent La Plaza is one of the most picturesque and romantic venues for intimate dinners under the glory of the Cabo sky. During this experience, guests enjoy a four-course meal on La Plaza and are then joined by a trained astronomer. They will have the opportunity to look through one of the most powerful telescopes in Los Cabos, taking in breathtaking constellations and perhaps even a shooting star or meteor shower.

These are only some of the goings-on behind the scenes at this iconic resort that expertly blends the best of Mexico with state-of-the art technology and the best-trained staff, providing peace, pleasure and perfection unparalleled.
