THE INTERVIEW: JENNIFER LOPEZ

With five film projects in the works for 2022 and a headline-grabbing romance with former flame Ben Affleck, Jennifer Lopez, 52, is once again proving her point: It’s J.Lo’s world, and we’re all just living in it.

In a career that spans nearly 30 years, the dancer /singer/ actress / director / producer has consistently demonstrated that she is a force to be reckoned with, as year after year she redefines her celebrity.

Part of her appeal is her genuineness in interviews and public appearances. With her sweet smile, a lilting laugh which seems to channel sunlight, and down-to-earth demeanor, Lopez could be your — albeit exquisitely dressed — next-door neighbor.

Yet on stage, “Jenny from the Block,” becomes a fierce force of nature, turning from sweet to smoldering on a dime, supremely comfortable in her own skin, and showing no signs of slowing down.

Being an artist doesn’t start because you’re 21, and it doesn’t end because you’re 51. You are who you are until the day you die.

Bronx-born Lopez got her first toe-hold in show business when she was cast as a “Fly Girl” dancer on comedy show In Living Color in 1991.

She moved on to a few small film roles before landing the title role in the acclaimed film Selena, a 1997 biopic of a popular Tex-Mex singer that earned her a Golden Globe nomination and a million-dollar paycheck, making her the highest-paid Latina actress at the time.

But her growing fan base exploded in 1999 when she released her first album, On the 6, which broke new ground in Latin pop music in the United States.

Lopez followed that up with her second album, J.Lo, in 2001, coinciding with her starring role alongside Owen Wilson in The Wedding Planner, and became the first woman to have a number one film and album in the same week.

Suddenly Jennifer Lopez was everywhere  — on the radio, in the club, on the silver screen  — as her status as a pop culture icon began to solidify.

Several successful films and hit albums followed, as did a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, a Billboard Icon award, and other accolades leading up to her 2016 to 2018 residency in Las Vegas, titled “Jennifer Lopez: All I Have” which grossed $101.9 million after 120 performances.

And while she worked her magic on stage and screen, Lopez also became a designer, launching highly successful clothing, perfume, and accessory lines which contributed to a net worth Forbes estimates to be around $400 million.

Life’s too short to live the same day twice.

As Lopez enters her 50s, she is uniquely poised, both personally and career-wise, to take her achievements to previously uncharted levels.

In 2019, Lopez embarked on a 32-show tour in celebration of her 50th birthday, performing nationally and internationally from June to mid-August.

In September, Lopez once again donned a version of the infamous, plunging green Versace dress she wore to the Grammy Awards in 2000, making a surprise appearance at Milan Fashion Week that brought down the house.

September also marked the release of Hustlers, with Lopez both producing and starring as hardened stripper Ramona, which drew her some of her best critical reviews yet and grossed $157.6 million worldwide.

In 2020, Lopez kicked off the year with her infamous Superbowl performance, appearing on stage with 12-year-old daughter Emme.

She also was part of Oprah Winfrey’s Visionary Tour, sitting down with the iconic talk-show host at the LA Forum to talk career, family and turning 50 at the end of February

While in quarantine she finished production on her next film, musical romance Marry Me, co-starring Owen Wilson, which is set for release on Valentine’s Day 2022.  Lopez also performs on the accompanying soundtrack.

It is said that an object in motion stays in motion, and Lopez is no exception. Throughout her career, she has broken barriers and boundaries and taken her fame to astounding heights through her unique and versatile talent and rigid work ethic, and don’t expect her to let up any time soon. Jennifer Lopez is, quite simply, unstoppable.

The Muse

Anya Taylor-Joy’s lifeplan wasn’t exactly what every parent wants to hear, but when she wrote a lengthy treatise to her parents at the age of 16 saying she wanted to quit school for acting, they acquiesced. Her drive and intensity even as a teen, coupled with a bewitchingly expressive face and famous doe eyes have shown the gamble paid off.

First noticed as a model while living in London, the precious teen was quickly making waves, wowing at Sundance in 2015’s The Witchwhich premiered when she was just 18. But it was her turn as Beth Harmon in 2020’s The Queen’s Gambit that introduced the sexy chess player to an audience of some 62 million on Netflix in the limited series where Taylor-Joy’s stardust was simply mesmerizing and much-lauded, earning her a Critics’ Choice Television Award, a Golden Globe Award and a Screen Actors Guild Award with an Emmy nomination pending Taylor-Joy returns to theaters in another dark role in the upcoming Last Night in SoHofrom director Edgar Wright, known for Baby Driver.

She’s also tied to the historical thriller, The Northman, in post-production, as well as a super-secret David O’Russell project with a monster cast attached including Robert DeNiro, Christian Bale, and Margot Robbie to name just a few. There’s no doubt this young starlet, just 25, will do more than hold her own.

“I can’t just say yes to a movie. I have to be really passionate about it.” —Anya Taylor-Joy

Messi on the Move

Lionel Messi, inarguably the greatest soccer player in the history of the sport, made an exciting move from Barcelona to Paris Saint-Germain late this summer, much to the delight of his new team and fans. Leaving Barcelona, a team he has played for since the age of 17, was bittersweet, but Messi is looking forward to playing —and winning —with his new club.Messi, originally from Central Argentina, began playing soccer at the age of four. He moved to Spain when he was just 13 with the goal of playing for Barcelona firmly in his heart.

Messi worked his way up through the junior leagues before making his professional debut with Barcelona on the pitch at just 17. His short stature coupled with incredible strength give him unrivaled agility with the ball, andcomplete control in play, making him indomitable on the field, and a clear superstar of legendary status.

Thus far, the 34-year-old has collected more awards than any other player, including a record six Ballons d’Or and six European Golden Shoes, surpassing famed soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo. He has also scored an incredible 672 goals in his 778 matches for Barcelona, with certainly many more to come during his tenure with Paris.

“Everything about the club matches my football ambitions. I know how talented the squad and the coaching staff are here. I am determined to help build something special for the club and the fans, and I am looking forward to stepping out onto the pitch at the Parc des Princes.” —Lionel Mess

Welcome to Shondaland

“The only limit to success is your own imagination” – Shonda Rhimes

Shonda Rhimes, 51, is a Hollywood powerhouse with a gargantuan list of awards and accolades. She’s the producer and writer behind Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal, and How to Get Away with Murder, among other shows. After signing a $150 million exclusive, four-year deal with Netflix, Rhimes hit the ground running with the wildly successful Bridgerton, a romantic and scandalous period piece that was one of the streaming service’s rise to the upper echelons of Hollywood took intense drive and determination, but when Grey’s Anatomy debuted in 2005, Rhimes star began to burn brightly, resulting in her being named one of the 100 most influential people by Time magazine in 2007.

“Don’t dream, do.” – Shonda Rhimes

After a period of introspection, Rhimes took a year to erase “no” from her vocabulary, an experience she documented in her 2015 book Year of Yes. That transformational process helped her face her fears and shortcomings.

Rhimes lost 110 pounds along the way, focused her energy on her health in the same way she had done with business opportunities and her duties as a single mother of three children. She found balance and became more present in the world.

With three more seasons of Bridgerton in the works, and a new series called Inventing Anna set to debut this year, Rhimes continues to shine.

Life In The Fast Lane

Sergio “Checo” Pérez is nothing if not tenacious. Born in Guadalajara, the Mexican Formula One driver, 31, competed in 190 races before finally casting victory in Bahrain in 2020, 10 years into his career, the longest wait for victory in racing history. Racing is clearly in his blood. Pérez’s introduction to speed on wheels began at the tender age of six when he started competing in karting races and finished his first season in second place. He moved to Europe to race at the age of 15 and navigated his way up the ranks to bigger and faster machines. Named to the sauber racing team in 2011, Pérez is only the fifth Mexican to drive Formula One, and the first since Héctor Rebaque in the late ’70s.

“I’m a bit speechless. I hope I’m not dreaming you know because I dreamed so many years of being in this moment.”

He quickly established himself as a tough competitor, finishing seventh in his first race in Australia and ascending to his first podium in Malaysia in 2012. His win in Bahrain marks the first victory for a Mexican driver in 50 years and he has earned more points than any Mexican driver in history.

Now racing with Red Bull, Pérez hopes to over-deliver for the 2021 season, and is determined that fans will be hearing the Mexican anthem from the podium for many years to come.

Surfin’ Ericeira

The town of Ericeira, about 22 miles northwest of Lisbon, is probably the best-kept secret on the Atlantic coast of Portugal. Considered a surf Mecca, this small fishing village is the only European member of the World Surfing Reserves and boasts year-round surfing on a diverse variety of waves at both beach and reef breaks.

However, the secret may be out. After more than three years of economic depression, Portugal’s recovery, which began in 2014, has been rising ever since. In the Lisbon metropolitan area, property prices were up by 7.2% in real terms in 2018 from a year earlier, to an average of $1,717 per square meter and reportedly, house prices rose in 23 of the country’s 24 urban areas.

Porto recorded the highest increase of 15.6% during 2018, and Sintra, close to Ericeira, went up 13.7%. During the last quarter of 2018, Portugal’s house prices increased 2.03% in real terms from the previous quarter. According to Moody’s Investors Service, the Portuguese housing market has upside potential, predicting house price increases of between 7% and 8%, at least until 2020, while the price to rent ratios also remain among Europe’s lowest.

Indeed, Portugal’s housing prices continue to rise, strongly fuelled by surging demand as well as improved economic conditions. Property prices in Portugal rose by 5.39% in real terms year-over-year in 2018, to an average price of $1,395 per square metre based on figures released by Statistics Portugal (INE).

For foreign investors, Portugal sweetens the pot with no restrictions on property ownership and generally low transaction fees. Furthermore, Portugal will grant a five-year residency permit to non-European citizens who buy a minimum of €500,000 worth of property. The permit allows holders to work, study, and travel in Schengen countries with an option for permanent residency after the five years.

So take your pick of breaks and visit the local real-estate agents for your dream surfin’ home-away-from-home and catch a ride on Portugal’s rising real estate wave.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Does Social Media Her Way

On The Move: Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez

The youngest woman ever elected to Congress has proved repeatedly that she’s also the indisputable leader of using social media to publicize a message. In between carefully worded campaign promotions, she has live streamed herself building IKEA furniture while drinking wine, eating popcorn, and discussing President Trump’s tax returns. A video of her dancing on a rooftop during her college years caused quite a sensation and prompted her to respond with another dance outside her office. “I hear the GOP thinks women dancing are scandalous. Wait till they find out Congresswomen dance too!” she tweeted.

AOC, as she’s known on social media, is a Boston University graduate who mixed drinks for a year before she won her primary. From the very start, Cortez leveraged social media – her Twitter presence in particular – to create and boost support in her campaign. Within mere weeks, she outpaced veteran Twitter users and media corporations with her well-timed tweets, peppered with emojis and compelling hashtags, and to garner an astonishing rate of interactions. Clearly, she knows her stuff. No surprise then, that party leaders commissioned Ocasio-Cortez to lead a social media training session for her House colleagues.

Perhaps even more because of her prominent social media presence, Cortez realizes the inherent perils associated with being constantly available online. She has spoken out about the “public health risk” of online platforms which can lead to “increased isolation, depression, anxiety, addiction, escapism.”.  Now that her role in congress is secure, she is using social media on her own terms – quitting Facebook (although her official congressional account remains live), while limiting her time on Twitter and Instagram to weekdays.

She still scripts her own Twitter and Instagram posts, advising other influencers “to be yourself and to really write your own tweets so that people know it’s you talking.” Her social wisdom covers such topics as being yourself online – “Don’t try to be anybody who you’re not.”; internet etiquette – “Mute people but try not to block them.”; and just being real – “It’s not the kitchen that’s popular, or the cooking that’s popular, it’s that I’m engaging people doing something I’m already doing.

Along with taking time off from social media on weekends, this is good advice for all of us, indeed.
