With nearly 27 years under his belt as a working actor, 34-year-old Brit Jonathan Bailey is finally coming into his due. WHILE most of his roles have been in theater, Bailey’s turn in the Powerhouse Netflix series Bridgerton has brought him searing attention, especially when his Lord Anthony moved into a starring role in the second series of Netflix’s most-watched English show in history. But he had been treading the boards since childhood, working with the Royal Shakespeare Academy since the age of seven and quietly moving up through the ranks to star in King Lear opposite Ian McKellen and the West End’s revisioning of Stephen Sondheim’s classic Company, for which he earned an Olivier Award.

Known for his light-hearted, often cheeky personality as well as his smoldering good looks and unabashed talent, look for much more to come from Bailey. He’s got a television series and film in pre-production, as well as the third installment of Bridgerton in the works, making for a bright future indeed, and a career that will continue to soar.

Bridgerton is actually delivering on changing the bar, and the standard of representation.

“The only limit to success is your own imagination” – Shonda Rhimes

Shonda Rhimes, 51, is a Hollywood powerhouse with a gargantuan list of awards and accolades. She’s the producer and writer behind Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal, and How to Get Away with Murder, among other shows. After signing a $150 million exclusive, four-year deal with Netflix, Rhimes hit the ground running with the wildly successful Bridgerton, a romantic and scandalous period piece that was one of the streaming service’s rise to the upper echelons of Hollywood took intense drive and determination, but when Grey’s Anatomy debuted in 2005, Rhimes star began to burn brightly, resulting in her being named one of the 100 most influential people by Time magazine in 2007.

“Don’t dream, do.” – Shonda Rhimes

After a period of introspection, Rhimes took a year to erase “no” from her vocabulary, an experience she documented in her 2015 book Year of Yes. That transformational process helped her face her fears and shortcomings.

Rhimes lost 110 pounds along the way, focused her energy on her health in the same way she had done with business opportunities and her duties as a single mother of three children. She found balance and became more present in the world.

With three more seasons of Bridgerton in the works, and a new series called Inventing Anna set to debut this year, Rhimes continues to shine.

Happy International Women’s Day!

During the constant struggle towards equality, there were several points where women broke through barriers and prejudice to earn rights and freedom were key.  The suffragette movements across the globe spanned decades and numerous inspirational women.  Emmeline Pankhurst (1858-1928) pushed the right for women to vote in England in 1918. “We are not here because we are law-breakers; we are here to become law-makers.”

Susan B. Anthony succeeded in voting in the United States presidential election in 1872 before being arrested and found guilty in a trial during which she was not permitted to speak. She used this to gain momentum and continue fighting for the suffrage movement.  “Men, their rights, and nothing more; women, their rights, and nothing less.”

Post WWII women came into the workplace in greater numbers than ever and while some excelled, most struggled with unequal treatment and glass ceilings for decades. In entertainment iconic women broke through to inspire millions.  Marilyn Monroe was a savvy business woman apart from her incredible ability to reinvent herself and helped Ella Fitzgerald in her career.  Fitzgerald became the first African American woman to win a Grammy (bringing in 13 total) and was a civil rights crusader seeking justice and equality. “Women who seek to be equal with men lack ambition” – Marilyn Monroe

Politics was one of the last places women entered successfully but Margaret Thatcher blazed a trail as the first female Prime Minister of Britain in 1979 and ranks 4th on the historical list of British Prime Ministers.  She was dubbed the “Iron Lady” for refusing to compromise on her political views and leadership style “If you want something said, ask a man; if you want something done, ask a woman.”

Sports is another arena where women were able to use their stardom as a platform.  Both Billie Jean King and Martina Navratilova were extraordinarily successful tennis players and outspoken on gender equality and LGBT rights.  Famous for her match against Bobby Riggs, Billie Jean King inspired millions of women from that moment on.  She was the first tennis player and first female athlete to ever be named Sports Illustrated Sportsman of the Year in 1972. “I wanted to use sports for social change.”

To all the women and men reading this: Women are a strong group who have persevered through so much to be where they are today. Support them, inspire them, appreciate them and celebrate them today and every day!

Veruschka

The Timeless Supermodel Veruschka

The Countess Vera Gottliebe Anna von Lehndorff-Steinort has been modelling since the early sixties under the name of Veruschka. More than a model, she is a performance artist and actress, forever reinventing herself.

Following World War II, when her father was executed for attempting to assassinate Hitler, Veruschka moved to Hamburg to study art, and later moved to Florence where she began her modelling career. She was discovered at age 20 by the photographer Ugo Mulas.

In 1961 she re-located to New York and reinvented herself, branding the Veruschka moniker. She caught the eye of Diana Vreeland, then editor-in-chief of American Vogue. Her first cover photos for Vogue were shot by Irving Penn and Bert Stern.

It was not just her luscious and lengthy figure that made her one of the highest-paid models in 1967, it was also her mystique, described on the cover of Life magazine as “Bizarre, Exotic, Six Feet Veruschka—The Girl Everybody Stares At.”

Though Veruschka stepped away from the commercial side of modelling, she occasionally shows up on catwalks. In 1994, she made a surprise appearance at the Chanel spring show in Paris, and at age 78, Veruschka recently popped up for Resort season as the Face of Acne Studios reminding one and all that Richard Avedon’s “most beautiful woman in the world” can still walk the runway looking like a Greek deity.
