Play Like a Girl

Play Like a Girl

For something weird and niche like the organ, which has historically been a bit side-lined from mainstream classical music, people can get really sucked into it and start to ask questions.”

With nearly 10,000 pipes, standing 70 feet high and weighing in at 150 tons, the Royal Albert Hall’s massive pipe organ is a monumental beast tamed as of late by the unlikeliest of musicians, a petite 28-year-old superstar conductor-composer-musician-media personality named Anna Lapwood.

The slight, smiley and bespectacled blond with a penchant for sparkly jackets often puts fingers and toes to the giant organ after midnight when rehearsal space is free, setting her phone next to the keys and recording her sessions for a massive TikTok audience where she is viewed as the Taylor Swift of classical music.

Using the hashtag #playlikeagirl, Lapwood routinely delights nearly 600,000 TikTok followers with her performances. One of the most common adjectives used to describe her success is ‘meteoric.”

At just 21, Lapwood was named (the youngest ever) director of music at Pembroke College in Cambridge, where she also conducts the college’s choir. Her talent was undeniable.

“Music-making should be fun — it should be about sharing joy and positivity.”

Charismatic and effervescent, Lapwood didn’t pick up the organ until the age of 15, an incredibly difficult undertaking, she recalls. But talent and tenacity paid off, and the girl and her instrument are changing classical music’s trajectory for a new generation

Lapwood was famously asked by electronic dance musician Bonobo to perform with him at a rave held at the Royal Albert. Millions tuned in for the show which Lapwood has called “life-changing,” both for herself and a new legion of organ fans drawn to what formerly was considered an archaic instrument.

Play like a girl, indeed!

Jon Batiste

Laissez les bons temps rouler

“Art is a window to the truth.” – Jon Batiste

Jon Batiste, 34, has New Orleans in his blood. It dances in his eyes, sparkles in his broad smile and manifests itself fully in the infectious music he creates.

As Bandleader for The Late Show with Stephen Colbert since 2015, he brings the ebullience of what is arguably America’s most musical city to the small screen on a nightly basis.

Born into an extended family of well-known musicians, Batiste started out on percussions at the age of eight, playing gigs on Frenchman Street with brothers and cousins before switching to piano at 11.

Batiste’s talent quickly drew attention; he has shared the stage with artists such as Prince in South Africa, London, Spain, Paris, and at Carneige Hall in 2007.

Fress off a Grammy win in 2020 for the song “Soul” from the Disney film of the same name, Batiste began working on a new album, 2021’s We Are. Given the solemn backdrop of events during that year, Batiste created an uplifting masterpiece, a testimony to what brings people together to our shared humanity.

“Whatever I do with music, I try to make it align deeply with the values and principles of who I am and what I believe the purpose of my life is. ” – Jon Batiste

Vivir la Vida!

With another Grammy Award under his belt for his first album in six years, Opus, which was named Best Tropical Album in 2020, Marc Anthony is once again proving his dominance of Latin music, and plans to take his incredible voice and commanding presence on the road in summer 2021 in a barrage of concerts. The top-selling salsa artist of all time, Anthony has sold more than 12 million albums worldwide.

Anthony was born in New York to  Puerto Rican parents and worked as a songwriter and backing vocalist for various pop acts before embracing salsa music.

“If you do what you love, you’ll never work a day in your life.” — Marc Anthony.

His smoky, passionate tenor is uniquely suited for the genre, which mixes infectious Cuban rhythms with hints of jazz.

Anthony’s crossover hit, 1999’s “I Need to Know” marked the emergence of the Latin pop era and achieved triple-platinum status in The United States.

With 30 Billboard chart hits and videos that have been viewed more than seven million times on YouTube, Anthony is a true ambassador for Latin culture.

A gifted actor, philanthropist, animal lover, golfer and father to five children, including twins Max and Emme with ex-wife Jennifer Lopez, Anthony is clearly living his life with the same passion he pours into his music.

LONG LIVE (THE) QUEEN!

Since the 1970s, rock band Queen has given concert-going crowds a reason to stomp-stomp-clap in rousing unison. Queen’s distinctive sound combines progressive rock and heavy metal with a substantial dash of camp and bombast. Their innovative guitar effects and multi-tracking in a mock-operatic style has everyone joining in a spirited rock-along. “We Are the Champions” and “We Will Rock You” remain public anthems and symbols of social unity. “Don’t Stop Me Now” tops Dr Jacob Jolij’s list of most uplifting songs from the last 50 years.

In 1975 “Bohemian Rhapsody” remained at No. 1 in the UK chart for nine weeks. The single gave its name to the recent movie Bohemian Rhapsody which has inspired a resurgence of Queen-appreciators, many too young to have enjoyed the band’s phenomenal early hits. The biographical film highlights the build-up to one of the most significant events in the history of rock music, as Freddie Mercury led the band in their show-stealing performance at Live Aid in 1985.

With record sales estimated at between 170 million and 300 million, Queen has been honoured with various industry awards including Outstanding Contribution to British Music, Outstanding Song Collection, and Hall of Fame inductions.

Even after Mercury’s death in 1991, Queen has continued playing to a dedicated following of enthusiasts. More recently, band members May and Taylor have toured with vocalists Paul Rodgers and Adam Lambert under the “Queen +” banner.

The Inspirational Shawn Mendes

Shawn Mendes was born in 1998 in Toronto, Canada. From Portuguese and English parents, his good looks and mix of Ed Sheeran meets Justin Bieber’s musical style, garnered him a large fan base at a very young age.  At 15, he was signed by Island Records. His debut studio album Handwritten delivered three hit singles: “Life of the Party”, “Something Big, and “Stitches.” “Life of the Party” entered the Billboard 100 singles chart at number 24, making Mendes the youngest artist to land a debut single in the Top 25.

A man with a musical mission, his single “Believe” landed on the soundtrack for the Disney Channel musical Descendants and he collaborated with Camila Cabello on the song “I Know What You Did Last Summer” which reached the Top 20 on the U.S. and Canadian Hot 100 charts. Mendes’ second album, Illuminate debuted at number one in the U.S. and Canada, achieving platinum status. On his world tour in 2017, he notched another Top Ten single in “There’s Nothing Holdin’ Me Back.”

In the spring of 2018, Shawn performed the single “In My Blood”, from his eponymous third album, Shawn Mendes, at a concert for Queen Elizabeth II’s 92nd birthday at the Royal Albert Hall in London. He just keeps on churning them out. The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200. Mendes, a young musical maestro, is an inspiration to us all.

Dua Lipa

London born music sensation Dua Lipa dreamed of collaborating with rock star dj’s like Diplo and Calvin Harris. And now – after the release of her first studio album and soon to be second – the stars are aligning and what was once a night time vision is a clear reality.

Courtesy photo by Nicholas Hunt/Getty Images

With an upcoming launch of two new hot singles, coined, One Kiss featuring Calvin Harris and Electricity with Diplo and Mark Ronson, Lipa is joining forces with top ranking dj’s to bring loyal fans a taste of notes that are just as sexy as they are in the studio and on the night club dance floor. With Electricity recently hitting radio stations on September 6th, listeners are going crazy as they tune in to one of the many collaborations that Lipa is signed on for with production company, Silk City.

But let’s rewind and take one look closer.  Throughout recent pop culture history, it seems like more and more A – list musicians have been seeking to collaborate with EDM spin stars. Between Billboard Chart favorites like Sweet Nothing by Calvin Harris and Florence Welch and We Found Love by Rihanna and produced by Calvin Harris, it’s noticeable to listener’s ears that there is an explosion of artist meets artist collaboration. Why you ask?

The fuel of creativity.

When we look back at who did it best, the magic was always in the duos who created masterful art forms together – like Andy Warhol and Jean Michel Basquiat. With the complement of different skillsets, sparks of imaginative innovation fly. And then we have a musical miracle. One that creates mega millions, sets trends, and changes narratives. Like the oldie but goodie, Dancing In The Street by David Bowie and Mick Jagger. Recorded in 24 hours – a mistake turn marvel – Rolling Stones actually ranks this groovy 1980’s classic one of the heart stopping best collaborations of all time.

So as you can see, mixtapes featuring power pairs have been not only an obvious success but a ticket to fame. And this one – we guarantee – will generate more than just sales but lightning bolts of electricity.

Sheku Kanneh-Mason – Cellist Extraordinaire

The Virtuoso Cellist of the Royal Wedding

Sheku Kanneh-Mason, is Britain’s hottest young cello player. Though only 19 years old, Sheku Kanneh-Mason is world-renowned. His parents, Stuart Mason and Dr. Kadiatu Kanneh, are not musicians. However, they have struggled, and succeeded, to provide their seven prodigious children with the tools necessary to hone their musical talents.

All, but the two who are still too young, study at the Royal Academy of Music. The three eldest Kanneh-Mason siblings also perform with Chineke! Orchestra: “…the first professional orchestra in Europe to be made up of majority black and minority ethnic musicians.” Sheku Kanneh-Mason made his BBC Proms debut at Royal Albert Hall as a soloist with the Chineke! Orchestra in 2017.

He released his first album, Inspiration, in early 2018. Sheku and four of his six siblings performed one of his debut album’s songs, “Evening of Roses,” at this year’s BAFTA (British Academy Film Awards) ceremony. The young cellist was invited to perform again at the awards, as a result of his stellar 2017 BAFTA performance of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah”; also recorded on his debut album.

During 2018-19, Sheku Kanneh-Mason will enter the Young-Artist-in-Residence program with the Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. Talented, handsome and fresh, Sheku’s tenacious, yet relaxed personality is bringing extraordinary classical music, along with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’ nuptials, into the twenty-first century.

He is Bruno MarsVELOUS

Bruno Mars is MarsVELOUS

Bruno Mars has his finger on the pulse of today’s hottest music.

Peter Gene Hernandez, known professionally as Bruno Mars, is a singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, record producer, and dancer. He has released seven number-one singles on the Billboard Hot 100.  His uplifting funky fun-beats are what made “Uptown Funk” the fifth music video in history to hit three billion views on YouTube and as of 2017, the singer has sold over 180 million singles worldwide.

Mars, born in 1985 in Hawaii, and living in Los Angeles since 2003, says his influences include Jimi Hendrix and Elvis Presley. His style is reminiscent of the best in R&B: James Brown, Prince and Michael Jackson. Indeed his musical roots are entwined with growing up in a musical family, as were Jackson’s. Mars has been performing on stage with his family since he was four years old.

Bruno Mars reigned supreme at the 60th GRAMMY Awards where 24K Magic made a clean sweep of every category for which it was nominated including Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Album of the Year – six awards total. He is the ninth artist to win six or more Grammys in a single ceremony.

Bruno Mars’ 24k Magic World Tour includes 210 appearances and began in March 2018. It will conclude in Los Angeles, at the Staples Center with special guest rapper Cardi B.

“I just know that I’m a fan of all different kinds of genres. You’re supposed to be free doing music, and that’s how I feel. – Bruno Mars

Mark your calendars now…  Buy those round trippers to the TriCentennial of New Orleans, and get tickets to Essence Fest July 5, 2018 – July 8, 2018. Did that sound bossy? Probably, but you know I’m so right. It’s going to be an amazing experience that you don’t want to miss. Get ready for the best of R&B, hip-hop, jazz and more at 2018 ESSENCE Festival® Presented By Coca-Cola® – the premier showcase for contemporary African American music and culture. Held over Fourth of July weekend at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome, this three-day party named for its founder and sponsoring magazine, combines high-octane music performances with inspirational speakers and provocative conversations about race, gender, culture and art.

Happy 300th Birthday New Orleans!

You might say this is a pretty big birthday for New Orleans. It’s not everyday even a city-girl turns 300 years old (or admits it), particularly after an incredibly harrowing natural disaster, who shall remain unnamed, but rhymes with Zatrina. I was there, at the Lamar-Dixon Center during that disaster, trying to rescue and save the animals, and you could feel the love all around from the absolute strangers working together trying to save the animals. New Orleans used to be the one of the most fantastic places on Earth, and now, and now she is somehow even more exquisite. Full of kindness, compassion, and, well, let’s admit it, epic parties.

Somehow our NEW New Orleans rises again from her own version of disaster, as the Phoenix rose from the ashes. And so this year, this 300th BIRTHDAY YEAR of our beautiful New Orleans is to be the most meaningful celebration of all time for this unbreakable city. A celebration of the spirit of the citizens of New Orleans that have worked so hard and relentlessly to rebuild new lives in their beautiful NEW New Orleans!

It’s a celebration of the beautifully multicolored diversity of New Orleans, and you’re going to find it all around you. There will be a ton of special events, seminars, concerts, firework shows, hotel specials to honor the people and stories that have made New Orleans the one-of-a-kind city that she is.  And you know no one throws a party like New Orleans. With over 130 festivals a year, there’s a celebration for everyone. “We dance even if there’s no radio. We drink at funerals. We talk too much and laugh too loud and live too large, and, frankly, we’re suspicious of others who don’t,” local author Chris Rose wrote. New Orleans can’t wait to show you a good time.

NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA

Essence Magazine has made New Orleans home to the highly sought after concert series since the early 1990s. Each year, the festival brings in the best performers and entertainers in the country, as well as a series of seminars created to empower African American men and women.

Previous artists at Essence Fest have included Beyoncé, Prince, Alicia Keys, Mariah Carey, and Kendrick Lamar just to name a few. This year’s event brings in even more music legends to perform in the legendary New Orleans Superdome.

The 2018 lineup includes… so far…

Janet Jackson
Mary J. Blige
Queen Latifah
Snoop Dogg
Fantasia
Miguel
Xscape
Jill Scott
Erykah Badu

Ed Sheeran: The Unlikely Superstar

Music Spotlight: Ed Sheeran

Ed Sheeran isn’t your typical pop-star.

He’s casually dressed, shaggy-haired and covered in tattoos, however don’t let his laid back look fool you. Sheeran is not only breaking the quintessential image conscious pop-star mold, but the 26-year old has mastered a unique sound in a league of his own. His chart-topping music is an eclectic blend of pop, folk and hip-hop, which has made this unlikely superstar one of the most accomplished male artists on the planet.

In 2011 his debut album, + (plus) reached seven-times platinum in the UK. The single “The A Team” earned him the Ivor Novello Award for Best Song Musically and Lyrically. In 2012, Sheeran won the Brit Awards for Best British Male Solo Artist and British Breakthrough Act.

His second album x (multiply) was released in 2014, which sold seven million copies worldwide and includes hit singles “Sing”, “Don’t”, “Thinking Out Loud” and “Bloodstream” winning him two Brit Awards. Notably, in 2016 Sheeran took home two Grammys for “Thinking Out Loud” in the Best Pop Solo Performance and Song of the Year categories.

Sheeran returned in March 2017 releasing, ÷ (divide), which to no surprise debuted at number one in the UK and US. It’s the third fastest-selling album of all time – after Adele’s 25 and Oasis’s Be Here Now – and has already gone double platinum.

With no signs of slowing down and refusing to fit in, the scruffy British singer/songwriter will only continue to capture audiences with his clever wordplay and soulful lyrics.

“I can’t tell you the key to success but, the key to failure is trying to please everyone.” – Ed Sheeran
