His visual representations, for they are more than photographs, are credited with the modern genre of supermodel in fashion photography, evidenced by his
British Vogue January 1990 cover. This universally- respected photographer’s iconic cover portrays the burgeoning supermodels Linda Evangelista, Naomi Campbell, Tatjana Patitz, Cindy Crawford and Christy Turlington.
Lindbergh photographed some of the biggest names in fashion, music and film. His subject list over the years is exhaustive, as was he, and includes: Tina Turner, Pina Bausch, Greta Thunberg, Jane Fonda, author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, as well as Spanish musician Rosalía, for the cover of Vogue España, and Gigi Hadid for Vogue Arabia. He is, to date, the only photographer commissioned for three Pirelli calendars: 1996, 2002, and working with, among others, Helen Mirren and Charlotte Rampling for the 2017 calendar.
Peter Lindbergh passed away in September 2019. His historical vision remains in his images and books: 10 Women, A Different Vision on Fashion Photography, and Shadows on the Wall; as well as the documentary released in early 2019, Peter Lindbergh: Women’s Stories.
