A Boy, and Love Actually, at 61, Hugh Grant is also showing audiences a darker side. And they’re loving it.
His latest turn in the HBO miniseries The Undoing has garnered him Golden Globe and Emmy nominations to add to his BAFTA and Golden Globe wins for Four Weddings and a Funeral.
His previous project, A Very English Scandal, also played against type, age has helped him drift away from the typical, portraying duplicitous and manipulative political leader Jeremy Thorpe. In fact, Grant hasn’t played a romantic lead in years, and the results have led to much meatier characters.
As Grant told The Sydney Morning Herald in 2020, "I got old and ugly and I'm not appropriate for romantic comedy films anymore, which has been a great blessing". While Grant does have more lines on his face, it’s proven to be an asset and allowed him to portray greater depth, with his floppy hair, stutter and upper-class British accent well intact.
