Playing Margaret Thatcher in The Crown is a long way from her role as Agent Scully in 1993’s The X Files, a show which had, and continues to have, a devoted, nearly obsessive following. But as Thatcher, Gillian Anderson, 53, is so fully invested in the character
it’s like she’s shape-shifted into the prime minister herself.
And she had heavy shoes to fill, with Meryl Streep having won an Oscar for
playing Thatcher in 2011’s The Iron Lady.
Anderson speaks of finding a fine line between total immersion into her role and allowing touches of herself to come through in order to provide authenticity, an insight into acting that came to her gradually over the years. Her start in show business, and fame, came early, at 24. She was a new mother and her star blasted into the firmament, with The X Files garnering some 40 million views on Sunday nights.
Lad rags consistently rated her on their “hot” lists, and when the show ended in 2002 she retreated to London, where she had lived as a child. With an Emmy win for her role in The Crown, Anderson, a published author of fiction, has already collected a Primetime Emmy Award, a Golden Globe Award, two Screen Actors Guild Awards, and an Evening Standard Theatre Award. In 2016 she was also appointed an honorary OBE (Order of the British Empire), proving her mettle and star power continues to dazzle audiences and critics alike in each role she embodies.
