Sant Ambroeus is a Delightful Taste of Milan

Sant Ambroeus: From Italy, With Love

Beginning with a devoted following in Milan, with global outposts in  Manhattan and Palm Beach, Sant Ambroeus offers a legendary Italian “caffè” experience.

Sant Ambroeus.

Originating in the richly historical and timelessly stylish city of Milan, two pastry chefs opened a café just steps from the legendary opera house, Teatro La Scala. Inspired by the fourth century patron saint of Milan, Saint Ambrogio, the pastry team named their pasticceria and confetteria with the Milanese dialect, “Sant Ambroeus.”

From perfectly-crafted cappuccinos and sweet cornettos in the mornings, to savory paninis for lunch, this welcoming café began to develop an enthusiastic following. In addition to a local meeting place during the day, the evening offers classic Italian favorites in the restaurant’s elegant dining room.

After flourishing for years in its original location in Milan, Sant Ambroeus crossed the Atlantic to bring the authentic Italian café experience to Madison Avenue in Manhattan. Locals and international visitors alike soon became regulars, enjoying classic espresso, homemade sweets and time-honored gourmet delights.

The spirit of Italy and the sophisticated flavor of Milan is apparent at each Sant Ambroeus café and restaurant. The dedication to quality and tradition, and the old-world feel of savoring each sip and bite, illustrates the Italian emphasis on pleasure and simplicity. With the quintessential feel of cafes and trattorias of Milan, patrons feel transported to Italy each time.

“In the cafes and trattorias of Italy, time often stands still. Meals are savored, not rushed; drinks are sipped, then refilled; and conversation flows between each course. Inside, there are no commitments, no deadlines, no waiters rushing you to turn over the table. These are sacred spaces that celebrate the important connection between food, friends, and family.”

Now with restaurants in the West Village, Soho, the Upper East Side and Southampton, and coffee bars in Sotheby’s, Hanley and the Loews Regency Hotel, Sant Ambroeus has become a New York establishment. Along with a location in Palm Beach, Florida, Sant Ambroeus specializes in that special Italian touch.

From Italian classics such as espresso beverages and pastries to specialty cakes and holiday desserts, patrons can ensure the use of only the highest quality ingredients. Sant Ambroeus specialties such as the Profiterole, a tower of intricately decorated chocolate cream puffs on a moist, coffee-soaked sponge cake base with crumbled pistachios, are carefully crafted by master pastry chefs.

Whether enjoying Sant Ambroeus in its origin city of Milan, or in one of its global outposts in New York City or Palm Beach, a fine Italian caffè experience is ensured.

Illuminate Blue with Iluminemos de Azul For Autism

#MakeItHappen with Iluminemos de Azul For Autism

Through brilliant awareness campaigns and events, Iluminemos de Azul is #MakingItHappen to create understanding and improve the lives of those with autism.

Their autism awareness campaigns have involved the help of Mexican soccer stars, photography contests, Zumba and 5K race events.

This April, Iluminemos de Azul invites supporters to “illuminate blue” during Autism Awareness Month, and especially on April 2nd for World Day of Autism Awareness. Be a part of the awareness campaign by sporting a blue ribbon, taking part and sharing on social media networks, and donating in support.

What is Autism?

“Autism is a life condition that affects to a greater or lesser extent social interaction through communication, behavior, language and sensory integration of people, is a different way of interpreting words, colors, shapes and the sounds of the world around us.”

The causes are unknown, although it is believed to be caused by a genetic factor associated with an environmental component. With personalized and specialized therapeutic treatment, those with autism can greatly increase their quality of life.

What is Iluminemos de Azul?

Iluminemos de Azul works to carry out social impact actions to sensitize, raise awareness and inspire society in favor of people with autism.

Why support Iluminemos de Azul?

Iluminemos de Azul works to provide support to families, promote the inclusion of people with autism in society, and support and collaborate with institutions and therapeutic centers.

The lack of information and knowledge about autism around the world is alarming. Autism is not a disease, but a life condition. It is a neurological and social diversity, which also has a serious impact on the family’s social and economic environment.

The treatment of a person with autism must be based on the deep understanding of the person, their condition and each case in particular, with early and timely intervention being key.

People with autism do not live in “their world,” they live in ours. This life condition is a different way of processing information, of interacting with and in the world.

Iluminemos de Azul believes that treatment goes beyond a diagnosis of the condition, going further into the diagnosis of the skills and abilities of each person. By providing the right tools for children and young people with autism, they can increase their quality of life and have more possibilities of an independent life.

Basquiat

Basquiat

From Street Beats to the Coveted Elite

Jean-Michel Basquiat was one of the most creative contemporary artists of the 1980s. The Haitian-American’s Neoexpressionist style made him a key figure in the New York art scene, until his death of a heroin overdose in 1988, at the age of 27.

Basquiat’s work is a commentary on racism and black identity that could have been taken from today’s headlines. In 2017, his “Untitled” (1982) skull painting set the highest recorded price for an American artist at an auction, selling at $110 million U.S. Basquiat’s doomed genius is reflected in this skull as much as racism.

Basquiat’s raw, untrained, hedonistic style is a mash-up of words weaving in and out of images. He created on every surface within reach, including his girlfriend’s dresses. Hip-hop, pop art and African art influenced his work, as did his lifelong fascination with the medical textbook, Gray’s Anatomy. His rap influence goes all the way back to the beginning with Rammellzee when he created the cover art on hip hop seminal single “Beat Bop”.

Though he started out peddling his postcard art on the street, Basquiat, like Rammellzee and Keith Haring, got his first taste of fame as a graffiti artist. By 1980, Haring was already a known artist, and he and Basquiat became friends. They did a collaborative exhibition in 1981 entitled, Public Auction.

Basquiat was also part of SAMO©, a poetical-political graffiti duo who tagged enigmatic epigrams in the Lower East Side of Manhattan. “SAMO© IS DEAD”, the final tag, marked Basquiat’s shift toward canvas work.  By 1984 Basquiat was collaborating with Andy Warhol and was a major part of NYC’s artistic explosion. Basquiat loved to paint wearing oversized Armani suits, and don the paint splattered-suits partying in Manhattan with celebrities including Debbie Harry, David Bowie and Madonna.

One of the best-selling artists of the last 50 years, Basquiat’s work is shown in museums all over the world and collected by many art enthusiasts including the celebrities Leonardo DiCaprio and Jay-Z.

The Importance of Shopping at Farmers’ Markets

Fabulous Farmers’ Markets in Cabo

Farmers’ Markets… going back to basics

Those were the days, when people had an easy-going life with less stress and less hurry. Nowadays, we find ourselves always rushing and running. Along with this came an entire lifestyle: fast cars, fast technology and fast food! Without noticing it, we ended up adding all types of chemicals and hormones to our food while not realizing the side effects. The good news is that it’s not too late!

Why organic?

According to the CCOF (California Certified Organic Farmers, a United States Department of Agriculture accredited organic certifying agency) and to the USDA Organic, studies show that organically-grown food has higher amounts of Vitamin C, magnesium, phosphorus and iron – all nutrients that are vital for the healthy functioning of our bodies. Organic fruits and vegetables are high in nutrients and antioxidants, which provide energy and youthful appearances. Data shows that organic milk contains far more omega-3 fatty acids than conventional milk.

Off your plate!

Certified organic agricultural operations avoid the use of most synthetic pesticides that are found in conventional agriculture. Chemical pesticides and herbicides have been linked to birth defects, obesity, diabetes, ADHD and other health problems. The US Government reported in 2010 that pesticide exposure is also linked to various forms of cancer. The Cancer Panel strongly recommended that people reduce their exposure to carcinogens by removing toxins from food, water and air. Each time you choose organic, you are choosing to leave these chemicals off your plate.

Organic meat, poultry, eggs and dairy products come from animals that have been given no antibiotics or growth hormones. Synthetic hormones have been linked to premature reproductive development in human females and health problems in livestock. Organic producers do not use genetic engineering (GE) or genetically modified organism (GMOs).

But, here in Cabo?

Yes, Cabo has fabulous farmers’ markets to cater your needs. Todos Santos, Pescadero, Cabo San Lucas, San José and even the East Cape all host beautiful stands with fresh produce. These farmers’ markets showcase the best of local organic produce: fruits, herbs, veggies, artisan cheeses and dairy products, organic meats, chickens and eggs. Some of the markets offer fish and seafood as well. A fine selection of jams, jellies, pesto, prepared foods (to eat right away or to take home), along with a nice variety of arts, crafts, fresh flowers, books and more goodies offer a fantastic Mexican Mercado Experience.

In Cabo San Lucas, there is one in the Pedregal area, small yet offering everything needed. This market is open every Wednesday and Saturday, from 7am to 12 noon. Parking is limited, however patrons can enjoy a cute coffee shop with a fantastic organic meal before or after shopping.

In San José, there are two options, depending on what would you like to do. There is a Farmers’ Market on Saturdays (Sanjomo) from 9am to 3pm, with a relaxed ambiance and activities such as yoga and live music throughout the green areas. Another option is the Organic & Crafts Market at The Shoppes at Palmilla every Friday from 9am to 1pm. This market offers more in-and-out easy access with ample parking, as well as stunning views to the Sea of Cortez. Although there are no activities, this authentic market offers a great selection of Mexican crafts and souvenirs to complete the experience.

Normally, due the weather, markets start first week in November until the last week on April.

Last, but certainly not least

There is true value in purchasing organic. For many that believe organic to be pricy, organic farming and production practices are costlier and often more time consuming than conventional methods. Plus, government support for organic production is unequal to the support for conventional agriculture.

The dedication and care that goes into growing organic fruits and vegetables is well worth the investment. In fact, many organic foods cost the same or even less than their conventional counterpart! Demanding more organic options and packing your shopping cart with certified organic foods shows meaningful support. This patronage helps grow the marketplace and positively change the food system.

With time and patience, organic products will gain a larger presence. Until that happens, hang in there and support local farmers – after all, your body is the ONLY ONE you have. Take care of it!
