Takes The Lead
The new year started off with a bang for Henry Golding, a Malaysian-British actor who rocketed to superstardom after his turn as jaunty fiancé Nick in 2018’s Crazy Rich Asians.
Not only are Golding and his wife expecting their first child, he also drew rave reviews for his thoughtful, haunting performance in Monsoon, released in November 2020, in which he plays Kit, a Vietnamese man raised in Britain who returns to his home country to spread his parents’ ashes and struggles with his identity, a familiar topic for the 33-year-old actor who moved to the UK when he was eight.
Although it’s hard to imagine him as anything other than a leading man, Golding was a hairstylist at a swanky London salon before moving to Kuala Lumpur at 21. There he hosted a travel show until his film career took off three years ago.
And it has in a major way. This year audiences will see him in Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins taking his first turn as an action hero, great news for his 1.1 million Instagram followers who have fallen for his considerable talent and charm, and a career move that will undoubtedly expand his loyal and exuberant fan base.
