It took Dame Judi Dench just eight minutes of screen time to garner an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in 1998’s Shakespeare in Love.
The classic Shakespearian actress, whose professional career spans more than 65 years, actually made her stage debut as a snail in her junior high school play, but from that modest beginning she grew into one of the greatest actresses of all time.
Dench most recently starring in Kevin Brannagh’s Belfast where she again steals scenes, earning her another Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress, perhaps adding a second golden statue to her collection of wins, which includes a Tony Award, two Golden Globe Awards, four British Academy Television Awards, six British Academy Film Awards and seven Olivier Awards, in addition to her Oscar.
Known for her sometimes salty language and biting wit, Dench celebrated her 81st birthday with her first tattoo, the words “Carpe Diem” etched into her wrist. The “Seize the Day” phrase is something of a personal motto that has served her well for 87 years and continues to guide her remarkable life.
