Rachel Zegler burst on the scene seemingly from nowhere when she was cast in the role of Maria in Steven Spielberg's 2021 remake of West Side Story, which was nominated for seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture.
The young American-Colombian actress, singer and songwriter, one of 30,000 hopefuls for the life-changing role, was just 17 when she first auditioned.
Zegler had already played Maria in her high school’s production, but going from a New Jersey performing arts center to Spielberg’s set was a dizzying experience.
The vocal powerhouse knocked it out of the park in her screen debut, drawing adulations from critics who called her a captivating discovery. And there’s no slowing down in her future.
This year she is set to start production on a live action version of Snow White, with Zegler in the title role opposite Gal Gadot as the evil queen. She is also slated to star in D.C. Comics’ production of Shazam! Fury of the Gods sharing screen time with Lucy Liu and Helen Mirren.
With a Golden Globe win for Best Actress already under her belt for her performance as Maria, look for more from this brightly shining star whose abundant talent has yet to be fully explored.
