Norman Foster, worldwide award-winning architect and
Fernando Romero, son-in-law of Carlos Slim, and architect
of Mexico City’s Museo Soumaya, (where Ocean Blue recently
held its benefit for Los Cabos) have won the design competition
for one of the largest airports in the world. The architectural
side of the project will be a collaboration between Foster and
Partners, FR-EE (Romero's firm) and NACO - Netherland's
airport consultants. This consortium will guarantee that the
world will be awed by Mexico's execution of its environmentally
conscious mega vision.
Of course the construction of Mexico City's futuristic airport
has not been awarded yet, but, as per my norm, I will go out
on a limb and speculate as to who might be the joint venture
partners for this gigantic effort. I propose the principle partners
in this challenging construction venture will be Grupo Carso,
the global conglomerate owned by Carlos Slim, and ICA, a
privately-owned Mexican infrastructure mega construction
company.
Clearly a document of Mexico's solid growth and international
relevance, this construction project will provide Mexico with
one of the top three worldwide international airports. The
airport is not meant to only be functional but beautiful. Its design
provides the most flexible enclosure possible to accommodate
internal change and an increase in capacity. British architect
Foster states, “There will be nothing else like it in the world.”
The futuristic airport will take the shape of an “X” symbolic of
the country's name, Mexico.
For Peña Nieto, Mexico’s ‘Gateway to the World’ could very
well be the keystone of his political legacy.
