Ultra-wealthy families are also rethinking their conventional
luxury consumption standards, with renting or co-ownership of
assets becoming increasingly popular. Celebrities from around
the world have long appreciated the perks of chartering a yacht
instead of buying one outright. Lewis Hamilton’s go-to favourite
is the stunning sailing yacht Roxane. While in Sydney Harbour,
Adele enjoyed disappearing from the public eye aboard Ghost II.
Ellie Goulding rented Silver Fast while holidaying in St-Tropez.
Other popular super yachts on the star-friendly list include: the
favourite of Beyoncé and Jay Z, Halo and the elegant Mischief
chartered by Will Smith while in Amalfi. Bill Gates pays for the
privilege of enjoying a Royal Yacht on Serene, and Simon Cowell
enjoys the exacting standards of Slipstream.
Another forum for the mega yacht is reality television. Bravo
Network’s, Below Deck and Below Deck Mediterranean, are
reality TV shows which document the lives of crewmembers working
aboard charter mega yachts. Below Deck, now in its sixth season,
has attracted affluent audiences among cable subscribers. Filmed in
the well-known Caribbean and Mediterranean Seas, the real stars of
both series are the yachts. Charter fees run from $140,000 and up per
week, for those interesting in having their own reality experience.
Cabo San Lucas, La Paz and the waters around Los Cabos are
favourite haunts for mega yacht owners from around the world.
Marina Cabo San Lucas offers a modern facility with thirty-
three mega yacht berths accommodating vessels of up to 375 feet.
The Baja Peninsula marina is strategically located at the mouth
of the Sea of Cortez. Some of the repeat visitors and permanent
vessels operating out of the area are: Dennis Washington’s Atessa
IV, Prince Mohammed Bin Salman’s Serene and his Rocinante
which recently arrived from San Francisco where she underwent
a five-month refit. The La Paz Marina is playing host to Steven
Spielberg´s Seven Seas while he awaits the completion of his new
358-foot Oceanco-built yacht, Project Y720.
For the latest yachting trends and marine technology, two events
should not be missed: the annual Cannes Yachting Festival from
September 10 through 15, and the Monaco Yacht Show from
September 25 to 28. Engel & Völkers French Riviera Yachting
Division can charter a yacht to suit your lifestyle so you can enjoy
these yachting galas in luxurious comfort amidst the action. Engel
& Völkers’ Special Events team is available to assist with all yacht
sales or rental enquiries, whether for these events or for your own
personal escape to the open seas in mega style.
