arlo Ponti, though 22 years Loren’s senior, won
out. The couple remained quietly and happily
married, after a soap opera-like start, until Ponti’s
C passing at age 94, in 2007. Loren and Ponti have
two children, Carlo Ponti Jr. and Edoardo Ponti. After the
difficult births of her children, Loren only acted occasionally,
expanding into marketing her own perfume, sunglasses and
beauty books espousing the benefits of Eastern medicine, body-
brushing, and apple cider vinegar.

Two of her notable later films include Prêt-à-Porter and
Grumpier Old Men, with Walter Matthau. Throughout the years
she continued to perform in films and also acted in the musical
Nine with Daniel Day-Lewis. In the over 100 roles she has
portrayed, her sex appeal has only been a portion of the unique-
spirited, savvy essence that she brought to each character.
Noted as one of “…cinema’s greatest treasures,” Loren was
granted an Honorary Academy Award in 1991 for her lifelong
contribution to film. In 2010 she received the Japan Art
Association’s Praemium Imperiale prize for theatre/film.
