Alfonso Cuarón was born in 1961 in Mexico City
and has an eclectic filmography. A student of
philosophy and film he dropped out of UNAM’s
Cinematography program over issues regarding his
first short film “Vengeance is Mine.”
At this year’s Oscars, he was surrounded by fans of his flicks
“Y Tu Mama Tambien,” “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of
Azkaban” and “Children of Men.” Nevertheless, his personal
favorite is the 1995 “A Little Princess” based on the children’s
novel. Says Cuarón, “Once I finish a movie, I never see it again,
and the memory of that movie and how it was - I was proud.”
Gravity was an epic undertaking for Cuarón and his team. It
took five years to bring it to the screen yet he never gave up. He
quipped at the Oscars, “For a lot of these people [who worked
on the film], the transformation was wisdom; for me, it was
the color of my hair.”
In 2014, Cuarón became the first Latin American to win the
Oscar for Best Director. In total “Gravity” won seven awards.
