On the evening of May 5, 2025, the steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art were once again transformed into a global runway for fashion, art, and cultural expression. The occasion: the Met Gala 2025, the exclusive fundraiser benefiting the museum’s Costume Institute. This year’s theme, “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” paid tribute to a long-standing tradition in which fashion has been a means of self-expression, resistance, and pride within Black communities.
As the Met Gala 2025 unfolded, it spotlighted the intersection of heritage and haute couture. Drawing from a legacy of bold fashion and cultural assertion, “Superfine” celebrated tailored ensembles—powerful statements on how Black identity has evolved in boundary-pushing ways. Behind the scenes, the evening was a testament not only to exquisite design, but to philanthropy, history, and the institutions that keep fashion’s past alive.
The Met Gala: Funding and Purpose

More than a glamorous affair, the Met Gala—officially known as the Costume Institute Benefit—is the primary source of funding for the Costume Institute and serves as the grand opening of its spring exhibition. This year’s show, featuring more than 200 garments, photographs, paintings, and artifacts, will be on view at The Met Fifth Avenue from May 10 through October 26, 2025.
Since its founding in 1948 by fashion publicist Eleanor Lambert, the gala has evolved into a global cultural event, attracting designers, celebrities, and patrons from every corner of the industry. In 2025, the gala raised a record-breaking $31 million to support the Institute’s exhibitions and acquisitions, according to the New York Times.
This year’s gala received substantial backing from Louis Vuitton, and other notable contributors such as The Perry Foundation, Africa Fashion International, the Hobson/Lucas Family Foundation, and Instagram. The funds raised at the Met Gala are vital to sustaining the Costume Institute’s mission; helping preserve and celebrate fashion’s rich heritage for future generations.
How Much Does a Met GAla Ticket Cost?
Admission to the Met Gala remains by invitation only—handpicked by Anna Wintour herself. But even for the chosen few, attendance comes with a high price tag. In 2025, individual tickets cost $75,000, while full tables reached $350,000. Many celebrities attend as guests of fashion houses, which sponsor tables and invite stars to represent their brand. The evening includes a cocktail reception, dinner, and exclusive performances—all behind closed doors.
Curating the Theme: “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style”
Each year, the gala’s dress code mirrors the Costume Institute’s spring exhibition, carefully curated by Andrew Bolton, with this year’s inspiration drawn from scholar Monica L. Miller’s Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity. Miller also joined the curatorial team as a guest curator.
The exhibition explores how Black communities have historically used fashion to craft identity, defy societal expectations, and reclaim narratives. From Harlem Renaissance–era suiting to contemporary couture, the show merges historical garments with multimedia installations and modern design to illuminate fashion’s role in shaping Black diasporic identity.
The Dress Code: “Tailored for You”
Echoing the exhibition’s theme, this year’s dress code—“Tailored for You”—offered a reimagined spin on the Met Gala’s signature glamour. Instead of opulent gowns, the red carpet was dominated by crisp tailoring, bold silhouettes, and culturally rooted twists on classic menswear.
Teyana Taylor was among the evening’s most memorable appearances, dressed in a bold ensemble she co-designed with costume designer Ruth E. Carter. Inspired by the Harlem Renaissance, Taylor wore a tailored three-piece pinstripe suit, complemented by a burgundy cape and a feathered velvet hat—paying tribute to the bold spirit of the zoot suit, an iconic outfit that sparked riots in 1943.
Leadership and Hosts: Steering the Gala
The 2025 gala was co-chaired by Anna Wintour, Lewis Hamilton, A$AP Rocky, Pharrell Williams, and Colman Domingo, with LeBron James serving as honorary chair. Their presence underscored the gala’s commitment to spotlighting Black excellence in fashion, culture, and innovation.
The Met Gala´s 2025 livestream was hosted by Teyana Taylor, La La Anthony, and Ego Nwodim, offering an inside look at the red carpet arrivals and exclusive interviews.
The Met Gala 2025 proved once again that fashion can be far more than spectacle—it can be a mirror to culture, history, and identity. Through “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” the evening honored the creativity, resilience, and influence of Black designers, artists, and icons who have shaped and reshaped the boundaries of elegance.
As guests descended the Met’s storied steps, they carried with them not just memories of an unforgettable night but a deeper reverence for the legacies woven into every stitch and silhouette.
