In a coup for Japan’s burgeoning luxury travel scene, an extraordinary collection of Van Gogh master pieces is set to grace three prestigious venues across the country, beginning in late 2025. The ambitious “Grand Van Gogh Exhibition” promises to be a visual feast, headlined by the luminous “Café Terrace at Night” making its first Japanese appearance in two decades.
The timing couldn’t be more perfect, coinciding with Japan’s luxury hospitality renaissance. Well-heeled travelers can pair their Van Gogh pilgrimage with stays at newly minted five-star properties, from the forthcoming Waldorf Astoria Osaka to the ethereal Banyan Tree Higashiyama Kyoto by Kengo Kuma. It’s a masterful confluence of art and luxury that promises to transform a simple gallery visit into an exquisite cultural sojourn.

The exhibition’s carefully choreographed journey begins at Kobe’s elegant City Museum, before winding its way to the serene spaces of Fukushima’s Prefectural Museum of Art, and culminating at Tokyo’s storied Ueno Royal Museum. Art aficionados will be treated to nearly 50works from the Netherlands’ acclaimed Kröller-Müller Museum, including both paintings and intimate drawings that trace Van Gogh’s artistic evolution.
