Snow Polo World Cup St. Moritz

Rommy’s red rascals race to victory in St. Moritz

St. Moritz, January 29, 2017.

Rommy Gianni’s Team Cartier won the Snow Polo World Cup 2017. In the Final, they beat Melissa Ganzi and her Team Badrutt’s Palace Hotel with 7-4. In the final of the runnners-up, Team Perrier-Jouët took its first victory – beating James Beh’s Team Maserati with 4-5. The 15,000 guests who had gathered over the three days have been entertained by some outstanding polo, whilst off the frozen lake, guests have enjoyed, fun, laughter and outstanding Swiss hospitality.

Sunday, January 29th was a culmination of three days celebrating the best snow polo in the world. The sun shone on the righteous and the organiser of this event, Reto Gaudenzi ‘The Godfather of Snow Polo’ has clearly pleased a higher being as the glorious weather continued for the Finals on Sunday, meaning that the playing surface was pure perfection, allowing fast and thrilling polo to delight the 7,000 spectators. The grandstands were packed as fur clad spectators sipped Perrier-Jouët, cheering on their favourite teams and enjoying the fun-filled atmosphere as Maserati cars chauffeured VIP guests and players to the frozen lake.

Saturday night had been a very special evening as the great and the good of St. Moritz enjoyed a sumptuous gala dinner at Badrutt’s Palace Hotel. Guests were entertained by a special Azeri display of dancing and music. Azerbaijan hosts The Polo World Cup in September and the ‘City of Fire’ is known for its friendly people and great hospitality. Guests also enjoyed a catwalk show with models elegantly showcasing the truly breath-taking Magicien Collection from Cartier, with those not playing the next day dancing the night away in the King’s Club.

Fast and entertaining: the final games on Sunday

The first match of the day was between Team Perrier-Jouët and Team Maserati for The La Martina Cup. In a close scoring match it was ultimately Team Perrier-Jouët who secured the title with a final score of 4-5. Post-match, Fabio Meier, conceded the match was as tough as the score suggested, «Maserati played well, they played aggressively and didn’t make it an easy game for us, so that’s why I am unbelievably happy that we won. As a team, I think we played well over the three days». As the sun continued to bathe the Engadin Valley in glory, The Cartier Trophy, the stunning trophy for the ultimate winners of the tournament was won by Team Cartier themselves after a Final which saw them pitted against Team Badrutt’s Palace Hotel. The match was an epic Final which reflected the fierce three-day competition, and with special permission from Engadin Airport, was filmed by a drone for the first time. The first chukka saw no score as the teams matched each other equally in defence and attack, but it was a different story in the second chukka which saw Cartier assert their dominance with three goals from Chris Hyde and Dario Musso and only one in reply from Alejandro Novillo Astrada for Badrutt’s Palace Hotel.

The goal scoring genie was well and truly unleashed and determined not to be the underdogs for long, Team Badrutt’s Palace came back fighting after half-time and quickly found the goalmouth twice in quick succession, to equalise the scores at three all. But Charlie Wooldridge for Cartier secured his name on the scorecard and at the end of the third chukka, Cartier once again took the lead. It was all to play for in the in the last chukka of play and it was at this crucial point that the firepower of Team Cartier was unleashed with three goals in quick succession. Alejandro Novillo Astrada scored for Badrutt’s Palace, but it was too little too late and as the final whistle blew, a decisive score of 7-4 in Cartier’s favour was the result.

Chris Hyde most valuable player

On Saturday, Team Badrutt’s Palace had locked horns with Team Perrier-Jouët, who having lost to the tournament favourites, Cartier, most certainly had something to prove. Once again, Team Badrutt’s Palace led the scores from the outset, and this early lead combined with many near misses from Team Perrier-Jouët finally culminated in a 6-2 victory for Team Badrutt’s Palace Hotel and a place in the Final. The next match of the day between Team Cartier, featuring 2016 winners Rommy Gianni and Dario Musso, defeated Team Maserati to win The Deutsche Bank Wealth Management Challenge and secure their place in the Final.

The polo bonanza had kicked off on Friday, January 27th with the first two qualifying matches basked in bright sunshine seeing fantastic playing conditions which Team Cartier player Chris ‘The Prof’ Hyde described as «The best it has been and playing really fast». The first match of the event saw last year’s runners-up, Team Cartier, take on Team Perrier-Jouët in a match which saw Team Cartier return to their previous style, as they characteristically led and sealed the deal with a 7-4 victory. Next-up, it was the turn of the Beh family, playing as Team Maserati, who took on the formidable Team Badrutt’s Palace Hotel who true to form dominated from the start, with the dynamic duo of Alejandro Novillo Astrada and Jesse Bray navigating Team Badrutt’s Palace Hotel to a confident final score of 7-1.

When the Snow Polo World Cup 2017 drew to a close after Sunday’s Final, 15,000 people had enjoyed thrilling polo, great Engadin hospitality and most importantly had great fun over the three days. As over 180 representatives of the world’s press gathered at the podium, the Most Valuable Player was fittingly awarded to Chris Hyde as he celebrated his sixth victory in St. Moritz. The Polo Times Best Playing Pony rug was awarded to his grey mare, Promise. In the words of Team Cartier player Dario Musso fresh from his victory… «See you next year!»

The Interview: Pierce Brosnan

The Charming Pierce Brosnan

The Legendary Irish-American Actor, Film Producer, Artist, Philanthropist and Two-Time Golden Globe Award Nominee

Pierce Brosnan

Brosnan saw his first Bond movie Goldfinger while living in England. It changed his world, igniting a fire for acting hitherto undiscovered. However, it is his humble Irish background, from his single-mother-headed family to his modest British upbringing, which have informed the gentleman behind the actor.

Though he began studying commercial art, Brosnan soon switched to acting, studying with the seriousness he would approach it his entire life; as a professional craft. He started off at Kensington’s Oval House Theatre Club and then graduated from the Drama Centre in London in 1976. He went to work as assistant stage manager at York’s Theatre Royal, where he made his professional stage debut in a play called Wait until Dark. He got his first major part in the British premiere of Tennessee Williams’ Red Devil Battery Sign at the Roundhouse Theatre, which received great critical acclaim, as well as personal kudos from Williams.

Brosnan as Bond

Still, the big screen beckoned and he decided to go to the land of movie magic: Los Angeles. Luck, acting skills, suave looks and debonair charm landed him the Bond-like lead character role in Remington Steele, where he played a criminal turned private investigator co-starring with Stephanie Zimbalist, as part of the television series’ investigative dynamic duo. This series was well loved and lasted from 1982 through 1987, solidifying Brosnan’s place in Hollywood.

By 1987, he had taken to the American big screen with The 4th Protocol. He did not get to play Bond until 1995 when he became 007 in GoldenEye, followed by Tomorrow Never Dies, The World Is Not Enough and Die Another Day. At this time, he also co-starred with Barbra Streisand in The Mirror Has Two Faces, and did a comedic stint in Mars Attacks!

From Steele to Bond, Brosnan had made it. Since then his dedication to his craft has never wavered. He has not forgotten that when he was starting out he could barely make ends meet. His strong work ethic has led him to create a marvelous body of work in action, comedy and drama that is seemingly endless.

Among Pierce Brosnan’s many film credits are: The Lawnmower Man, Long Good Friday, Mrs. Doubtfire, Seraphim Falls, The Thomas Crown Affair, Mamma Mia!, Love Is All You Need and The November Man. He has recently completed production on The Foreigner, a Martin Campbell film, co-starring Jackie Chan. He is currently filming The Only Living Boy in New York with Jeff Bridges and will next star in Across the River and into the Trees, based on Ernest Hemingway’s classic novel.

His secret to conquering Los Angeles?

“Being an actor in Hollywood involves lots of things beyond acting. Charm really helps. And it’s a good idea to incorporate a little Bond into all your dealings.”

Brosnan started his own production company, Irish Dreamtime with Beau St.Clair in 1996. It has produced many films to date including The Nephew, The Thomas Crown Affair, The Match, Evelyn, Laws of Attraction, The Matador, The November Man released in 2014, and I.T. released in 2016.

Brosnan has received numerous awards and nominations in the television and film industry over the years. He has recently been recognized for his extensive contribution to the film world with the 2016 European Film Academy Achievement and World Cinema award.

Brosnan Golf

The Pierce Brosnan not always emphasized is the devoted family man. He was dedicated to his first wife, the Australian actress Cassandra Harris, with whom he has three children and he was devastated when she passed away from cancer at the age of 43. He credits his early success to her.

“Cassie has made me the man I am, the actor I am, the father I am. She’s forever embedded in every fiber of my being.”

He is equally devoted to his current wife, the American journalist Keely Shaye Smith with whom he has two sons, Dylan and Paris.

He has also returned to his expression as a visual artist, devoting time to painting at either his Malibu or Kauai homes and producing colorful Giclée prints which he gives to family and friends and also sells to support his charitable activities.

Brosnan and his art

An active human rights supporter, he has spoken out for the acceptance of same-sex marriage and is enthusiastically involved in many other socio-political issues. He is concerned about the planet, acting as spokesperson against “the destruction of our environment by our own carelessness”. With hope he encourages people to take charge,

“We are all forces of nature—the catalysts and agents of change, the architects and engineers of a new tomorrow. We shape and create our reality every moment of every day, and like no species before we have the power to define our future.”

Brosnan at brunch

The Irish-American and honorary OBE citizen Pierce Brosnan is recognized worldwide for his actor’s charm and good looks but also his good works. He has long incorporated into his craft, the private, caring individual he is. He values the simple things in life like friendship, art and family, especially after the recent loss of his Irish Dreamtime production company partner and good friend, Beau St. Clair, to cancer.

What’s important to Pierce Brosnan? He states modestly,

“Being with my wife and children in Kauai, seeing old friends there, being on the beach, painting, and paddle-boarding. Sitting under a Kauai moon with a bonfire going, buddies around. Those are the things that kind of make my world turn.”

Snow Polo Cup in Kitzbühel Austria

Corum Snowpolo Kitzbuehel 2017

Team Corum won in Kitzbühel, Austria with one of the best results ever. The first sensation of the new polo year.

Corum Snowpolo Kitzbuehel 2017

Kitzbuehel, January 12-15 2017. In a fast final Patrick Maleitzke, Philip Sommer and Lukas Sdrenka won the 15th CORUM Snow Polo World Cup Kitzbühel by a superior 12.5-6. Though the Irish team Engel Völkers, including Richard Fagan (Most Valuable Player), Michael Henderson and Santiago Torreguitar, won their two respective matches in the preliminary round, in the final there was no doubt which team was way out in front of the other in terms of speed, tactics and not least because of owning faster horses. Right from the start playmaker Patrick Maleitzke and his strong team mates kept the speed high to give their opponent from the Emerald Isle no chance. Before the final David Traxler, CEO of the Swiss watch manufacturer Corum, was confident and put his complete trust in his team, though it started with a lower team handicap on paper than their opponent and with 0.5 goal advance. With reason. According to the old saying by Caesar “Veni, vidi, vici”, Patrick Maleitzke also announced to play for victory in Kitzbühel. Team Corum accompanied the path to winning the tournament by a goal balance, which should be among the best results ever achieved in Kitzbühel.
