H igh in the Andes mountains of Peru is the
UNESCO-protected Machu Picchu, an
archaeological monument said to be built
in the mid-15th century and thought lost in
history until found by Hiram Bingham. Built at the height of the
Inca empire this ceremonial, agricultural and what specialists
now claim is an astronomical center encompasses two hundred
structures divided into farming and residential areas with a large
public square between the two, and exquisite panoramic views.
