PORTFOLIO

A s with other investments there
are a multitude of factors that
   make vinyl records collectable.
   The album cover and sleeve
artwork is considered to be attractive in its own
right. For example Mambo for Cats and Kid
Ory art covers designed by Jim Flora are not
only superb jazz classics but thanks to their art
they are sought-after collectables even in their
reprint versions.

Rough Trade in East London, Tower Records
in Tokyo, Amoeba in Los Angeles and above
all Zero Freitas from Brazil, all with reputed
vinyl collections, have become the destinations
to buy, sell, exchange and obtain investment
quotes for vinyl records.

The future of vinyl seems bright. After eight
successive years of growth the statistics for the
end of November 2016 indicate that the latest
trend for the first time in decades is showing
that more money is being spent on vinyl album
sales than in digital album downloads.

It is important to bear in mind that to be
successful in building such a portfolio the
same steps must be taken as with any other
asset: gather information and get to know the
market leaders. Hopefully the financial returns
will be as satisfying as the emotional returns of
owning and listening to timeless classic vinyl
recordings.
