As the daughter of a cabinet maker, Sophie Coryndon grew up surrounded by exotic materials and exceptional craftsmanship. Her work is characterized by an array of decorative techniques, materials and fascinations that she combines to create intricate wall reliefs, objects and drawings.
A rich tapestry of inspiration; illuminated manuscripts, medieval altarpieces, historical ornaments, cabinets of curiosity, myths and magic realism make up the groundwork of her work. ‘Stitched’ slowly into each piece is an exploration of beauty and wonder, a quest for awe and a calling to re enchant, shining a light on or ‘illuminating in gold’ what we have and what we stand to lose.
Coryndon’s work has been shown at leading international art and design fairs including Tefaf, PAD and Design Miami/Basel. She has worked with high profile architects and interior designers including Peter Marino for Dior and Chanel. Her 2022 traveling altarpiece, “Hortus Conclusus” was purchased by the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of art for their permanent collection.
“When I look at an exquisitely made object or hear a memorable piece of music, it reminds me that humans are capable of great beauty.”
