Ice From The Torne River Is Transformed Into An
Ever-Evolving Hotel, Bar, And Art Gallery That
Tops Many Travelers’ Bucket Lists.
E very year, when the Torne River turns to ice a new Icehotel is
created in the small village of Jukkasjärvi in northern Sweden,
140 miles north of the Arctic Circle. The ice of the river
transforms to design and architecture at Icehotel, an art project
and the world’s first, and largest hotel built of snow and ice.
In 1989, a Swede by the name of Yngve Bergqvist built an igloo on the frozen
banks of the Torne River in Swedish Lapland to showcase indigenous Sami art
and handicrafts. A few intrepid travelers asked if they could sleep in the igloo for
a taste of what the Swedes call 'the exotic'.
