W hy did the Gibson Les Paul, the Fender Stratocaster,
the Martin D-18, the Höfner Bass Violin 500/1 and
other masterpieces of electric or acoustic guitar
makings became veritable icons of the twentieth
century? It is not only because these guitars are beautiful but also
because they have brought to rock, folk or blues something more - a
note, a brilliance, an attack, or a particular sound due to the shape of the
guitar neck, body, microphone or mechanics.
These guitars also became legendary because they were able to seduce
great guitarists who often remained faithful to them throughout their
careers. Some examples include: BB King’s Gibson ES-335, named
Lucille; Johnny Winter’s Gibson Firebird, Jimi Hendrix and his
Stratocasters, George Harrison and his Rickenbacker electric, 12-string,
guitar; Brian Setzer’s Gretsch G6120, and last but not least Jimmy Page’s
Gibson Les Paul.
YouTube has abundant videos showing interviews of great guitarists and
their collections of electric and acoustic instruments, most of which are
considered vintage guitars.
